| Likes: | Quirky hatchback is sharply Gremlin-ized S40 sedan. DOHC, 227-hp turbocharged 5-cylinder and quick 6-speed will nudge 30 mpg highway; sports every possible safety device. Comfortable front seats, acceptable rear, glass tailgate evokes 1800ES; huge taillights occupy all rear-facing panels. |
| Gripes: | Climate controls infuriating, with no numerical gradations. Directional pictogram requires a dangerous amount of attention. Clutch engages at top of travel. Trunk space limited. Too heavy to be quick. |
| Verdict: | Tentative entry in hatchback category surely too small for regular Volvans, too expensive (and dull) for youth market. If Volvo wants to play, where is the AWD, 300-hp turbo “R” version with 20-inch bling wheels, roof spoiler, and wild colors? |
