Contributing Editor

John Apen has restored, vintage-raced and shown collectible cars for many years. He is the original owner of a 1960 Corvette and has owned (and worked on) cars as varied as a 1937 Packard to a Mercedes 6.3. He was the factory authorized Ferrari and Maserati dealer for 17 years in Atlanta with a restoration shop that attracted work from all over the US. He has a collection of ten cars, extending from a restored 1966 Chevrolet pickup truck, to a 1971 Rolls Royce convertible. His collection also includes several Ferraris which have won “Best of Show” Concours trophies. Most recently, his Ferrari 275 GTS won major awards; “Best Unrestored Ferrari" at the Ferrari Club of America Annual Meet in Atlanta, a class award at the Amelia Island Concours, and Best of Show at Italian Car Day in Atlanta. As a Vintage racer for thirteen years, he has competed on practically every major American track. In 1994, he drove his 1957 Ferrari 250 TdF from Atlanta to Monterey for the 21st annual race, where he won Automobile magazine’s “The Way it Was Award” for best embodying the spirit of vintage racing. For SCM, he is the Italian Exotic specialist, and has been associated with SCM Magazine since 1996. He is also responsible for all data on the Manheimgold.com Web site. To monitor the market, he attends many auctions and concourses each year. He has appeared on PBS’s Motor Week program as their Collector Car Expert. He is the co-author of Ferrari Tuning Tips, reprinted by Velocity Press, and contributor to Keith Martin on Collecting Ferraris. He has degrees in Engineering and Operations Research from University of California-Berkeley, New York University & Johns Hopkins.
