Platinum Database Search Help

To get the most out of our online auction database, you should learn a few basic things about the search tool to use it to its greatest potential.

The Search Form |  The Search Results |  Other Tips |  Back to the auction search page
The Search Form
Our search tool has several fields that allow you to make a broad or refined search for auction records. Fewer fields filled in return broader matches, such as searching for Porsche in the Marque field. The more fields you fill in, the more specific your search can be. For example, you can search for 1964 Porsches that were sold in September by a specific auction company.
  1. Show Advanced Options Your search starts with basic fields that are most common. To get a more refined search, click this link to show more fields.
  2. Search Term Type This defaults to 'contains', which will search for any words anywhere in the corresponding fields. To get a more exact search, you can change it to 'exactly matches'. This may cause your search to have fewer results, but may be more accurate.
  3. Car Years You can specify the exact year or range of years for the car you are looking for. To search for one year, fill out just the first field (e.g. 1964). To search in a range, enter values in both fields (e.g. 1964 and 1967).
  4. Auction Year and Month If you know a car has sold in an auction in a specific month and/or year, enter them here. You can enter either or both (e.g., search for auctions in September of any year, auctions in 2001, or auctions in September 2001).
  5. Sort Options While you can sort your results while you are looking at them, you can also specify sorting before you start your search. The default sort order is descending, so if you sorted by date, the search tool will return results with the most recent dates at the top of the list.
The Search Results
Once you have determined your search parameters and clicked the search button, you will see a list of results (if there were any). This is a short run-down of the matches returned for your search, from which you can pick to see the details of each (if you have a Gold Membership). If you do not have a Gold Membership, or are not logged in, this is as far as you can go.
  1. Plain English search results explanation This will tell you in plain English what you searched for, and is there to help you remember what you searched for.
  2. Search Results Navigation This allows you to navigate through the results by providing previous and next page buttons, a drop-down to jump to any page in the results, and buttons to modify your search or start over.
  3. Sort By The blue links at the top of each column allow you to sort the results on the fly. An arrow pointing down next to the link means the results are sorted by that field descending (Z-A alphabetically, greater number first numerically). An arrow pointing up next to the link means the results are sorted by that field ascending (A-Z alphabetically, lesser number first numerically).
  4. Car Marque/Model This link takes you to the details of the particular record.
  5. Car Image Thumbnail If the record has a photo, a thumbnail of it will appear here. Some records do not have photographs. You can also click on this thumbnail to view the details of the record.
  6. GraphsTo take full advantage of the graphing function, please specify marque, model, and year span. Scatter and Candlestick graphs are limited to provide easy-to-read graphs. Please refine your search terms if you want to view a specific year.
Other Tips
  1. Cookies must be enabled To use our search tool, cookies must be enabled in your browser. Our search tool will not function if you have cookies disabled.
  2. Use broader searches first If you can't find what you are looking for, try starting your search in a broader way. For instance, instead of searching for 1967 Ford Mustang sold in September 2001, start by searching for Ford Mustang.
  3. Fields with stray values Our search tool remembers your search values, so if you come back to the page, make sure that all the fields are empty that you want to be empty. For example, you may have searched for 1968 Alfa Romeo, but came back later to search for Ford Mustang. If there was still a value in the year field, it would apply to your new search, which may get you different search results than you wanted. Click the "Reset Form" button to clear all saved values.
  4. Spelling and spacing is important If you are experiencing difficulties finding a particular make or model please make sure both spelling and spacing are correct. The search engine makes a distinction between XK-E and XK E, for example.
