Clean, slippery profile is contemporary, but not too “jellybean.” Plunging windshield offers the best forward visibility of anything I’ve ever driven. No-nonsense acceleration and handling, good road feel. It cruises down the highway effortlessly; stop-start traffic and city driving is painless, too. Intuitive stereo and climate controls. Roomier inside than expected.

Basic upholstered interior will be a magnet for crumbs and spilled coffee. Automatic door locks always seem to get it wrong.

My pick for “Daily Driver of the Year.” The 2013 Civic hits the sweet spot of “sporty” economy yet again. Decent acceleration isn’t thrilling, but it’s all you should ever need in the real world. Same goes for the handling, which feels nimble yet stable. Whether you’re driving this car on a daily commute or a multi-day road trip, there is really no effort involved. The Civic does all the work for you, but still maintains that connected feeling with the road. For $21k, it does everything right.
