Bonhams announced today that a rare transitional example of Ferrari’s famed and coveted Berlinetta, the 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB/6C will headline the popular auction held annually at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance in Connecticut. This stunning collectible Ferrari has been chosen as this year’s ‘Poster Car’ by the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, and is expected to realize bidding in excess of $1M, leading Bonhams sale of important collector motorcars and automobilia on Sunday, June 3rd.
“With impeccable provenance and a high quality restoration that continues to present well, Bonhams is honored to offer this car from a prominent private collection which is only its fourth ownership from new,” Rupert Banner of Bonhams Motoring Department said.
Delivered new through Charles Rezzaghi Motors in San Francisco, the car was actually collected from the factory in Italy by its first owner Dunstan S. Gross of Piedmont, California, before being shipped home. A late ‘short nose’ car, it was supplied as new with a number of distinctive features of the later ‘long nose’ cars, including ‘long nose’ instrument panel, top mounted foot pedals in the larger foot well and a rear parcel area behind the seats. Importantly, the car carried its ‘6C’, six-carburetor set up from new as a special request from the factory.
For nearly 20 years, it remained with its original owner, after a brief two year stint with a collector, it passed to its next long term owner, a fastidious collector and Ferrari Owners Club judge, who would keep the car until 2008. During his custody, a comprehensive and sympathetic restoration was completed, putting it into lustrous deep red paint scheme, though keeping the majority of the car’s original Cognac leather interior.
“We look forward to bringing this headliner to the fifth Bonhams annual auction at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, where we anticipate strong interest from the Connecticut tri-state area, West Coast and abroad,” Mr. Banner remarked.
Last year Bonhams enjoyed record crowds and sales in the $3.5M range at the auction held in conjunction with the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, which is listed in 1,000 Places to See Before You Die! The Greenwich event features Concours Americana on Saturday – exclusively for American makes, while Sunday’s Concours International is exclusively for imported cars. The Bonhams auction of collector motorcars and automobilia will be on Sunday, June 3rd with preview days on the Friday and Saturday prior.
