The SCM crew is still in a daze from the cyclone of events that swirled across the Monterey Peninsula over the weekend, but we can report a few facts to tide you over until the dust settles…

Kicking things off on Thursday, August 13, at the Portola Hotel & Spa, RM dispersed all 51 lots of the Nick Alexander Woody Collection for more than $7.3m, with high sale going to a rare 1946 Mercury Sportsman convertible at $368,500. RM has those results here, and you can read more about the sale here.

On Friday, August 14, in Carmel Valley, Bonhams & Butterfields concluded its annual Quail Lodge auction with final results near $13.2m. High sale there was the ex-William Boyd “Hopalong Cassidy” 1933 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Convertible Victoria, which made $1,437,000. Bonhams has those results here.

On Saturday, August 15, in its inaugural sale at the Monterey Hyatt, Mecum boasted the high sale of the weekend, with the 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe bringing an auction record for an American car at $7.25m on the block. Unofficial results peg Mecum’s total at around $17m; when SCM has them officially, you will too.

On Saturday night at the Monterey Marriott, Russo and Steele drew some notable results from vintage Porsches, with a lovely 1951 356 1500 Reuter Split-Window Coupe hitting $100,000. This was topped only by their Friday night sale of Ferry Porsche’s own 356, a 1961 Carrera 2 Cabriolet, which made $300,000. Official results will be posted soon.

Across the street, RM ended its two-day Sports & Classics Auction with totals of more than $34m. Tops among them was the ex-Phil Hill 1952 Jaguar C-type, which set an auction record for the model at $2.53m. Other million-dollar cars include a 1955 Aston Martin DB3S at $1.98m and a 1935 Duesenberg SJ Disappearing Top Convertible at $1.43m. Read more here and expect official results to be posted soon.

Numbers from the Saturday half of Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach Auction came to $21m from 74 lots, with a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder making $2.75m. At sale’s end on Sunday night, David Gooding declared final numbers of about $48m, including $4.65m for another Cal Spyder, a 1962 SWB. More information and official results will be posted soon.

Saturday’s SCM Insider’s Seminar at Gooding was a great success, with keynote speaker Don Williams of the Blackhawk Collection sharing his memories of time spent with some of the greatest cars in the world. Publisher Martin recapped market trends for ten models we have been watching over the last four years, and SCM’s market experts fielded questions from the attendees about the state of the market, before breaking into groups for the field walk.

Finally, on the concours front, SCMer Robert M. Lee of Sparks, Nevada, claimed Best of Show at the 59th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with his 1937 Horch 853 Voll & Ruhrbeck Sport Cabriolet. Proceeds from raffles, auctions, sponsorships, and gate receipts helped to contribute more than $1 million to charity for the fourth consecutive year. Read more about the Horch and the entire concours here, and see a complete list of winners here.
