Shelby GT 500 Fastback
On Thursday 13 March 2008 at 6pm (E.S.T) Bonhams & Goodman will hold a sale of collectors’ cars and automobilia in Melbourne. The sale has been strategically timed to capitalize on ‘Grand Prix fever’ which will be in full force as Melbourne gears up for the important race.
Car enthusiasts will have the opportunity to view an exciting array of motor cars at the historic Como House and Gardens in South Yarra.
Highlights from the sale include a 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Fastback Coupe. The GT500 is one of the great, iconic muscle cars of the 1960s. Legendary Texan racing driver Carroll Shelby’s team had been campaigning Ford’s Mustang ‘pony car’ with considerable success in North America, winning the SCCA’s B-Production title three years running in the mid-1960s. Capitalizing on his success, Shelby began manufacturing modified Mustangs, which were officially sanctioned and sold through selected Ford dealerships. The fully restored car is expected to fetch $200,000-240,000.
Those interested in pre-war classics will love a VSCCV Vickery Trophy-winning 1930 Invicta 4½-Liter Type A Tourer and 1922 Lorraine-Dietrich Model B3-6 Tourer. The Invicta was brought to Australia in the early 50’s and apart from a meticulous engine rebuild and sundry minor modifications, the Invicta remains in highly original and unrestored condition – a rare attribute for a car of its class and age. It has an auction estimate of $80,000-120,000.
Lorraine was the first marque to win the famous Le Mans 24-Hour race twice and the first to win in consecutive years. The current owner purchased this Lorraine-Dietrich B3-6, as a completed restoration project, from a collector/restorer in Queensland. Delivered new to Australia and originally a four-seater tourer, it is now fitted with a recreation of the Le Mans-style ‘boat tail’ coachwork. The car has an auction estimate of $80,000-120,000.
Accompanying the strong selection of cars is a single owner collection of automobilia and other collectibles. The collection of over 100 lots includes an array of ‘boy’s toys’ such as petrol bowsers, enamel advertising signs, a static display Pitts Falcon bi-plane once owned by aerobatic pilot Pip Borrman and garaganalia. This component of the auction will be on view at a warehouse in Burwood however will be auctioned at Como House at the same time the cars are offered.
