The Dana Point Concours d’Elegance, host of the premier celebration of automotive heritage in Southern California, today announced the theme for the 2012 Dana Point Concours d’Elegance®: “Legends of Le Mans: Racing in the ’60s”.  The Concours weekend is scheduled for Saturday, June 23, to Sunday, June 24, at the prestigious St. Regis Monarch Beach resort in Dana Point, Calif., and will feature more than 200 European and American classics and more than 50 vintage motorcycles.

“We’re anticipating the 30th Annual Dana Point Concours d’Elegance to be the best event yet,” said Jeff Spellens, president of the 2012 Dana Point Concours.  “Our team is working hard to host a fantastic celebration, honoring some of the best racers and race cars of our time.  The 1960s were legendary in the automotive industry with names like Shelby, Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus and Alfa Romeo, all competing to be the best in the world.  We’re thrilled to honor their legacies by celebrating their history during the two-day event.”

Commemorating the historic 1960s race car era, the Dana Point Concours will introduce special classes for exhibitors to participate, including the Legends of Le Mans Race Car class.  The Dana Point Concours will also introduce the Shelby Cars class to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Shelby American Inc.  Ducati will be the featured Marque this year for the vintage motorcycles classes.

The two-day celebration of classic and exotic cars and vintage motorcycles will feature activities for enthusiasts of all ages.  The Concours kicks-off Saturday with a Private Collection Tour featuring some of the most exclusive automobile collections rarely seen in Southern California.  Beach goers and surfers will also enjoy the Beach Cruisers Show on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The event will host more than 200 VW’s, Woodies and assorted Hot Rods to celebrate Southern California’s surf culture.  The Ladies Luncheon and Fashion is also scheduled to coincide with the Private Collection Tour and Beach Cruisers Show that day.  Saturday’s activities will wrap up with the invite-only Exhibitor’s Reception that evening.

“The Dana Point Concours is designed for both the serious car collector and the amateur enthusiast,” noted Spellens.  “We want to invite everyone to come celebrate some of the finest automotive iron in Southern California, while taking in the beautiful scenery of the St. Regis Monarch Beach resort.  Not only are we introducing some new activities for families, such as the Beach Cruisers Show, we’re also bringing back popular traditions, like the Private Collection Tour and Dana Point Concours Art Exhibit.  No matter your automotive taste, you’ll enjoy yourself during the Dana Point Concours d’Elegance weekend.”

The highlight of the weekend will begin Sunday morning as display vehicles check-in for the official Concours starting at 6:30 a.m. PDT.   Exhibitors will have the opportunity to compete in more than 30 different classes and vie for some of the most prestigious awards, including Best of Show, the Catherine Thyen Award, the Chairman Classic Car Award selected by Chairman Dick Waitneight and the Briggs Cunningham Award, to name a few.  Gates open at 9 a.m. for spectators.
