The $17-million sale held by Artcurial Motorcars at Retromobile on 3 February 2012 is the biggest-ever sale of collectors’ cars in France.

World record prices were achieved for the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder LWB ($5,740,248), the Citroën DS Pallas ($227,597), the Citroën 2CV ($75,866) and the Delaunay Belleville ($600,834).

Matthieu Lamoure, managing director of Artcurial Motorcars said after the sale:

“This record-breaking Retromobile sale confirms Artcurial Motorcar’s position as one of the foremost international auction houses for the sale of collectors’ cars. Our relationships with Retromobile and Classic Le Mans provide the platform to offer the most prestigious cars at some of Europe’s premier motoring events.”

Highlights included:

• 90% of the 102 motorcars and motorcycles sold with many realizing prices above their pre-sale estimates.

• Multiple bidders for many of the top cars, with nine people bidding for the California Spyder. The car sold to one of eight telephone bidders.

• 50% of the lots were offered without reserve

• A collection of 15 barnfind cars untouched for 40 years was 100% sold, realizing $877,000 double the pre-sale estimate. Top price in the collection was $94,074 (estimate $25,472 – 38,208) for the 1937 Rolls Royce Phantom III Coupe Chauffeur

” These excellent results underline the attraction of Paris as a venue for international collectors, where prices realised match and in some cases exceed those achieved in the US for equivalent models. The market recognises the importance of good provenance and values cars that are in exceptional or very original condition,” said Matthieu Lamoure.
