The Ten Cheapest Monterey Cars of the Last Decade
10. 1955 Chrysler Windsor 2-Door Hardtop
Company: RM Auctions
Location: Monterey, CA
Date: August 26, 1999
Sold at: $5,280

"Pushbutton radio, automatic, P/S, P/B. Poor paint, driver's door handle screwed on, poor door fit, oily rag duct-taped over oil breather (can't afford a filter?). Run hard and put away wet but solid and runs much better than it looks."

"Looks like what it is, an old warhorse champing at the bit for another charge at the California Mille. Considering its sound condition it's a good buy at this price."

9. 1980 Triumph TR8 Convertible
Company: RM Auctions
Location: Monterey, CA
Date: August 26, 1999
Sold at: $4,950

"5-speed, A/C, 35,822 miles. Good repaint (overspray on undercarriage) and original interior. Clean and well looked after. Photos in trunk, however, showed the crash damage from which it was rebuilt. No Reserve."

"The seller should be commended for honesty, because those photos made the difference between regular TR8 money ($8-10,000) and this price."

8. 1968 Cadillac DeVille convertible
Company: Bonhams
Location: Carmel, CA
Date: August 18, 2006
Sold at: $4,914

Excellent panel fit. Older repaint has poorly touched-up chips above headlights and on door edges, and poor masking at windshield base trim. Good chrome shows light scratches. Clean interior, with wear on front seat base and cracks on driver's back rest. Auto climate control, AM/FM radio.

Somewhat tired Caddy convertible, good for ice cream runs at the beach. Priced accordingly.

7. 1971 Honda N600 Sedan
Company: RM Auctions
Location: Monterey, CA
Date: August 26, 1999
Sold at: $4,675

"Once was white. Chromed alloy wheels, original AM radio. Fair older repaint; chips touched up with the wrong color. Fair 3 year-old interior, good chrome. One family since new."

"At this price the new owner got a a neat old car sure to please the kids as well as an ideal station car, always able to squeeze into a non-existant parking place."

6. 2007 Vespa LX 50 scooter
Company: RM Auctions
Location: Monterey, CA
Date: August 17, 2007
Sold at: $4,400

Titled to and signed by pop diva Britney Spears. As-new in all respects.

Let's see... a lock of her "buzzcut" hair, or her scooter. At least with the scooter you can lip sync "Hit me baby one more time" as you scoot around town.

5. 1989 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL Saloon
Company: Christie's
Location: Monterey, CA
Date: August 18, 2005
Sold at: $4,112

A Bhagwan car. Moonroof. Paintwork appears to be holding up well, especially considering the miles obtained. Brightwork is good with minor scratching, windshield shows light scratches. Interior shows quite a bit of wear, some delamination to wood on console, seats are a bit softly sprung through use.

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh was the spiritual leader whose followers showered him with their love, attention and gaudily painted luxury vehicles. As recently as 10 years ago, it seemed as if every auction had a Bhagwan car. Now we're down to one or two a year. Bought for less than the price of its paint job; no bargain however, as this was a well used--almost to the point of used up--Benz.

4. 1980 Pontiac Trans Am pace car
Company: Russo and Steele
Location: Monterey, CA
Date: August 13, 2004
Sold at: $3,850

4.9-liter turbocharged V8, 4-bbl, auto. Car has a long list of needs not the least of which is a re-spray. Equipped with T-top. Paint faded and side graphics missing. Radio out of car. Body decent. Dash not cracked.

Pontiac built 5,700 of these Indy pace-car replicas, equipped with a few decals and a bird that covered the hood. Not originally sold in CA, as the 210-hp turbocharged engine wouldn't pass emissions. It was a very expensive car in its day, listing at $11,194. Question is, now much money do you pour into a car with a top-end value of about $15,000? Second question is, do you really want to drive around in 25-year-old Indy pace car replica?

3. 1975 Marketeer 220 Golf Cart Open 4-seater
Company: RM Auctions
Location:Monterey, CA
Date: August 18, 2000
Sold at: $3,520

"Electric motor, chrome Moon hub caps, room for four golf bags. Said to be the actual golf cart from Fantasy Island. Da cart, not da plane."

"With the prices of Jollys, Mini-Mokes and other so-called beach cars going out of sight, is it any wonder real golf carts are showing up at auctions? Celebrity connection might have added a third to the value."

2. 1965 Chrysler 300 2-dr hard top
Company: Bonhams
Location: Carmel, CA
Date: August 18, 2006
Sold at: $3,510

Panel fit and paint are good. Chrome is good with light pitting and waviness under plating on bumpers. Interior is fair to good, with worn plastic trim. A/C, power windows.

This car was sold at the August 2005 Bonhams Quail Lodge sale (SCM# 38975) for $5,750. As I wrote last year, "There's no real appreciation potential here, so I'd call it priced appropriately." Well, not only was there no appreciation, it's apparently cost $6.30 for each of the 355 miles its covered since. Ouch.

1. 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III
Company: Bonhams
Location: Carmel, CA
Date: August 20, 2004
Sold at: $345

Powder-coated "rolling" chassis, brings new meaning to the term "rolling," since there was no suspension. It was mounted on rubber casters. One expert opined that it didn't have some crossbracing in the right places either.

No interest in the room at a starting bid of $500. Announced sold in the result sheet for $345. Cheaper than a lot of the mascots or manuals that took up the first two auction hours, but also much bulkier and hard to take home as carry-on.
