Quirky hatchback is sharply Gremlin-ized S40 sedan. DOHC, 227-hp turbocharged 5-cylinder and quick 6-speed will nudge 30 mpg highway; sports every possible safety device. Comfortable front seats, acceptable rear, glass tailgate evokes 1800ES; huge taillights occupy all rear-facing panels.
Climate controls infuriating, with no numerical gradations. Directional pictogram requires a dangerous amount of attention. Clutch engages at top of travel. Trunk space limited. Too heavy to be quick.
Tentative entry in hatchback category surely too small for regular Volvans, too expensive (and dull) for youth market. If Volvo wants to play, where is the AWD, 300-hp turbo “R” version with 20-inch bling wheels, roof spoiler, and wild colors?
