First introduced in 2001, the 2013 MDX is a definite player in the luxury midsize SUV market. Our test vehicle came equiped with the full gamut of driver safety features: Adaptive Cruise Control, side airbags, dual-stage front airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist, tire pressure monitoring, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, Auto-Leveling Xenon HID Headlights, Blind Spot Information System, Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror, Rearview Camera — all of which will make the average driver feel more confident on the road (and quite frankly, pretty pampered). It has enough power for typical city/highway use. Better looks than your typical SUV, but it doesn’t exactly stand out in a crowd either. The fit and finish is excellent.
My main dislike is the abundance of dash/console controls. A bit too busy for what I’d consider a luxury SUV. I felt as if I needed a co-pilot to help me run a pre-flight checklist before leaving for my destination. Although the controls were compartmentalized, I still found myself getting lost when wanting to change climate control over audio in a hurry. I’m sure after getting acclimated, it wouldn’t be a problem. I also found myself driving more and more in the “Sport” mode than standard “Drive”. It provided better engine-braking downshifts and quicker upshifts at higher rpm, which allowed the V6 to sing a better song, probably due to the Dual-Stage Intake Manifold and Variable Flow Exhaust.
Overall, I found the MDX to be a stable, easy-to-drive SUV. It provides a great entertainment system, more than enough seating for the average small family and plenty of luxury features. The Acura spec sheet lists “No scheduled tune-ups required for 100,000 miles.” That appeals to my lazy side, which I’m all-too-happy to explore every now and then.
