I was pleasantly surprised at the styling and sportiness this Accord coupe offered. When I hear the Accord name, I typically think of the early ’80s four-door bore-mobile I once owned, but this car quickly forced that memory to the back of my head once I got on the drive-by-wire accelerator. The V6 has a nice, aggressive exhaust note which inspires “look at me” moments when given the green light at intersections. I quickly achieved comfort with the 10-way power driver’s seat and tilt/telescopic steering column adjusted just the way I like it, not to mention heated seats were a welcome option on chilly mornings. And if cooling seats were an option I’d quickly check that box as well.
The 6-speed manual-transmission shifter felt a bit weak, as if it might break off in the hand of someone who thinks shifting quickly means shifting aggressively. The electronically assisted steering felt a bit twitchy. The 0.771:1 6th gear didn’t seem low enough at higher-end freeway speeds, but the non-V6 Accords get a lower (0.686:1) 6th gear. That would aid in improving fuel economy, but that’s not what this sporting coupe is about, now — or is it?
Overall a fun offering from Honda that has changed the way I think about Accords. The size was great for around-town driving, with easy maneuverability for parking. More-than-ample trunk size allows you to pack more for extra days on road trips, and you’ll be looking for twisties on the way to your destination. The sunroof adds to the enjoyment. Fit and finish were superb, stacked instrument cluster gave a unique 3-D perspective for the passenger (not so much for the driver) and the infotainment system was easy to use and sounded great when I was not listening to the exhaust note from the 278-hp V6. Add in the pleasant exterior styling, and it’s a car I’d definitely land in my garage.
