1936 Delage D6-79 teardrop coupe
On Sunday 25 March 2007 at 1pm (E.S.T) Bonhams & Goodman will hold a major sale of collectors’ cars, motorcycles and automobilia in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. This is a new concept – a first for a collectors’ cars sale in Australia.

“By providing our vendors with the opportunity to sell their vehicles to collectors worldwide at a sale viewed in three different states, we have been able to expand our offering at this auction”, says Robert Glover, National Head of Collectors’ Cars who joined the Bonhams & Goodman motoring team from Bonhams in London earlier this year. “This is the largest mixed vendor collectors’ car auction conducted by Bonhams & Goodman in recent times. We have accumulated a mouth-watering selection of cars to suit all wallets and tastes”, he adds.

MELBOURNE—Melbourne sees some delightful pre-war exotica on offer including a c.1925 3/4½ litre Bentley, superbly restored to ‘Old Mother Gun’ specification and a 1936 Delage D6-70 ‘teardrop’ coupé rebuilt to extremely high standards to replicate the Figoni & Falaschi coupé piloted by Louis Gérard to 1st in class and 4th overall at the 1937 Le Mans 24 hour race, expected to fetch around $430,000-480,000 and $250,000-$350,000 respectively.

The pre-war theme is further strengthened by a Rolls-Royce Phantom I tourer ($85,000-110,000) and a 1938 MG SA sports saloon ($35,000-45,000).

Fear not post-war enthusiasts, Victoria has also provided a great selection of post-war classics the highlights being a beautiful Jaguar MKV Drophead Coupé ($70,000-80,000) and an Audi Quattro in tarmac rally form ($25,000-35,000).

SYDNEY—Sydney has a plethora of interesting vehicles on view for sale. There has been an excellent response to the marketing of the low mileage, beautifully restored original Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III which looks set to keep auctioneer and Chief Executive Officer, Tim Goodman very busy indeed as he conducts the sale.

In addition, a c.1999 Maserati Quattroporte is attracting interest from far and wide. The one owner vehicle is being offered for sale by Mr George V Gillott as a charity item with the sale proceeds being donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDA). Maserati collectors not only have the chance to purchase this car with only 40,000 km from new, but to also support a very deserving charity. Bonhams & Goodman will also donate the seller’s commission to the RFDSA.

Car enthusiasts interested in film will love the Chrysler Crown Imperial Limousine formally the property of MGM studios ($50,000-70,000).

PERTH—Western Australia has been without a quality collectors’ motor car auction for some time and as a result, the response to the Bonhams & Goodman sale has been huge with 18 cars consigned to the Perth sale.

Of particular interest is the ex-Bert Needham Studebaker Commander R4 ($50,000 – 60,000). With a Bathurst Class win under its belt, the historical importance of this car is unquestionable.

A 2001 Holden Monaro CV8 is perhaps not what you would expect to see at a Bonhams & Goodman collectors’ cars auction, but the example being offered has just 73km from new and was the first off the production line. If you have heard of the Matchbox toy car in its original wrapping, then this is a grown up’s car with some original production line protective wrapping. The last Holden Monaro to come off the production line had people talking when it made $187,600 at an on-line auction in 2006. A sure fire classic of the past and future, it represents a superb opportunity for long term investors.

From a pre-war Salmson to a post-war Aston Martin and more modern classics from Mercedes, Rolls-Royce and Jaguar to name but a few, the importance of Western Australia within the Australian collectors’ motor car market has been re-established.
