RM’s one-day-only sale at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy, totaled more than $45m from 32 cars. In the process, the Canadian firm established a number of collector car auction records, including totals for a one-day sale.
Another record was the $9.2m price achieved for a 1962 330 TRI/LM, making it the highest price ever paid for a Ferrari at auction. The 330 TRI/LM was the last Testa Rossa built and the only one to use a 4-liter engine. It was the car raced by Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien to outright victory at LeMans in 1962, the last time a front-engined car would win there.
RM had previously sold the car in August 2002 at its Monterey event, when it brought $6.5m. In June 2005 at a similar Ferrari factory sale held by Sotheby’s, the car crossed the block but failed to sell at just over $8m.
Other notable sales included a 1953 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione that made $5.7m, and a 1971 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider that sold for $1.4m.
In all, eleven of the 33 cars offered sold for over a million dollars.
