On January 11, a banquet and auction took place for the charity Child Help, a national organization that seeks to rescue battered and abandoned children. Steve Austin’s Automobilia donated an original painting by Nicholas Watts. “Spirit of America” depicts the winning 1964 Daytona Coupe at Le Mans.

This year’s banquet was chaired by Bob and Pat Bondurant with the theme of “50th anniversary of Shelby’s first historic victory over past continual victors, Ferrari.” The painting was signed by Bob Bondurant, Dan Gurney and designer Peter Brock. The expected sale price of $20,000 was shattered with the hammer falling at $62,000.

Sports Car Market readers can add to this charity by purchasing signed giclée prints of the painting, where $250 of the $750 goes directly to Child Help. Interested parties can call Steve Austion at 503 824 4079 or 503 349 8769.
