The Petersen Automotive Museum is auctioning off three pedal cars at Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona from January 18th through the 20th. As part of the Petersen Automotive Museum’s Deuce Week celebration of the 80th anniversary of the ’32 Ford, nine of the hottest hot rod builders in the country were invited to create pedal car versions of their personal style of hot rod. Each builder started with a pedal car 1932 Ford Roadster and then used their vision, craftsmanship and passion to create the one-off customized collectibles. Three of the nine pedal cars have already sold and have raised $15,000. The final three pedal cars will sell later this year at the RM Auction in Amelia Island, Florida. All proceeds raised will help fund the Robert E. Petersen Free School Bus program which brings children from the underserved schools of Los Angeles to the museum for field trips.
The first pedal car to be auctioned was built by Gene Winfield Rod & Custom and used Gene Winfield’s iconic “Winfield Fade” technique. This method, which in this instance used candy apple red paint, gets darker towards the bottom of the car and turns almost white across the hood. This unique paint style gives the car a more voluminous shape. This is item number 5392 and will go across the auction block on Friday, January 18 between 9:45 and 10:15am.
The second pedal car to be auctioned was built by H&H Flatheads as a tribute to an automotive pioneer, Barney Navarro. As one of the first speed equipment manufacturers, Navarro’s lakester was one of the first cars to run a roots style blower on the engine and raced at Bonneville and El Mirage, setting records along the way. This is item number 5469 and will go across the auction block on Saturday, January 19 between 9:20 and 10:00 am.
The final pedal car to be auctioned was built by SO-CAL Speed Shop and was influenced by Alex Xydias’ SO-CAL Speed Shop Streamliner which raced at the first Bonneville Nationals in 1949. SO-CAL’s Evin Veazie was instrumental in the build, bringing both his father and brother in to help as the entire Veazie family is known for being avid car collectors and builders. This is item number 5590 and will go across the auction block on Sunday, January 20 between 9:45 and 10:15.
