Thursday in Monterey saw the first day of auctions, as Mecum and Russo and Steele cranked into action. But this wasn’t a day of big cars and big money, although both of these auction houses will put exceptional cars on the block this week.

All this will change starting today, as RM, Gooding and Bonhams will join the anvil chorus of big cars hammering sold. We attended RM’s big, pre-auction gala Thursday night, and five amazing, rare Mercedes-Benz cars — four 540Ks and one 500K — gleamed under stage lights as models clad in 1930s finery posed nearby.

Will four 540Ks and one 500K — including a 1937 540K Special Roadster — spur the market into record highs for these cars? Or will the market be glutted? We’re predicting record prices.

In addition, quite a few Mercedes-Benz 300SLs will cross the block at Gooding, RM, Mecum, and Russo and Steele. Values for 300SL cars — both Gullwings and roadsters — have skyrocketed since January, and will this trend continue in Monterey?

We’ll start seeing answers to that question later today, but the Mercedes-Benz picture will not come into complete focus until Sunday. Stay tuned, and look for some auction results tomorrow!
