The Arizona auctions are now complete. The ACC team has returned back to HQ, and we’re working on making sense of the numbers that came out of last week’s sales. This year’s totals highlight some interesting trends and tell us a few things about the market — and that’s stuff you’ll be able to read in the next issue of ACC, which we’re building right now.
In the meantime, I’d like to know what you thought of this year’s auctions. What do you think the best buy of the week was? Maybe it was one of Staluppi’s cars at Leake, or maybe it was something Classic at RM Sotheby’s or Bonhams. Did Barrett-Jackson have it, or was it over at Gooding? How about Worldwide or MAG? Russo and Steele?
Best buys don’t have to be cheap buys, either. They just have to be unrepeatable deals, either because of the rarity of the chance or because the price was right.
One of my favorite buys of the week happened over at RM Sotheby’s — Lot 212 was a 1996 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Coupe with just 96 miles on the clock. At $53,760, it wasn’t cheap, but it’s a fantastic example of one of the ultimate C4s. Yes, the ZR-1 is a more complex car, but that isn’t always a bonus when a dwindling parts supply is factored in. Plus, Viper prices have been on the upswing, and this car plays in the same sandbox. I don’t think you’d find a better GS for less, and there are a bunch of next-gen bidders who love icons from this era. The future is bright and this buy was a smart one.
