BLENHEIM, Ontario (March 25, 2010) – RM Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction house, will drop the hammer on an outstanding private collection of high-powered muscle cars in June as part of a single-day sale in San Diego, California.

Scheduled for June 19, 2010, and billed Classic Muscle & Modern Performance, the sale will present over 80 magnificent examples from a prominent Southern California collector, all to be offered without reserve. From GTOs to Corvettes, Chevelles and Mustangs, the offering spans a variety of iconic Detroit muscle and represents the owner’s lifelong passion for high-performance vehicles.

In addition, the sale will also feature a diverse range of low-mileage, as-new late model BMW’s and Mercedes-Benz automobiles from the same collection, including AMG and M-powered machines.

“RM is delighted to have been chosen to present this outstanding group of cars at auction. Rarely do we get to see such an unparalleled group of cars offered for sale and from a buyer’s perspective – the quality, rarity and outstanding level of maintenance and documentation are nearly unmatched – bidders will be able to buy with confidence in every respect.” says Ian Kelleher, President and Chief Operating Officer of RM Auctions.

“When building the collection the owner’s goal was to assemble the ‘best of the very best’ and this is certainly true of the offering, with each example fully documented and maintained to the highest possible standards. In addition, the selection of cars on offer features many rare color combinations, and many examples have undergone professional, concours-quality restorations, making for a range of exclusive, not-to-be-missed ownership opportunities for muscle car enthusiasts,” he adds.

Headlining the line-up is a super-rare, tire-shredding 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L88, fully documented with low mileage. Powered by a 430-horsepower 454-cubic inch engine, the L88 is one of 18 different Corvettes slated for the auction block during the event. Another star attraction for the sale is an all-powerful, superbly restored 1970 Chevelle LS6 Convertible, considered one of the most desirable of the genre. Equipped with a massive, pavement-scorching 450-horsepower 454-cubic inch V8, one of the most legendary engines in muscle car history, the Chevelle LS6 is one of only 18 in existence and believed to be the only LS6 Convertible with the attractive red / black color combination. It is one of five Chevelles from the collection consigned to the June sale.

The auction line-up also reflects the owner’s enthusiasm for GTOs – a lifelong passion that can be traced back to his childhood growing up in Detroit and a superb 1965 Tiger Gold Pontiac GTO driven by his parents during his youth. On offer at the June sale are some 20 pristine examples, headlined by an unmistakable 1969 Pontiac GTO “The Judge”, restored by marque specialist Scott Tiemann of Supercar Specialties.

Other notable highlights include: a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429, one of just 498 examples produced that year, and two 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28s.

RM’s upcoming San Diego sale continues the company’s strong presence in California which has included a string of highly successful private collection sales in recent years.

“Over the last several years we have worked actively in serving and representing Southern California collectors at auction,” adds Kelleher. “Our upcoming Classic Muscle & Modern Performance event not only builds on RM’s reputation as the specialists for the auction of private and estate collections, but also as the preeminent and preferred auction house serving California in all areas of the collector car market. No other auction company serves Southern California’s car collector community as extensively and regularly as RM Auctions does.”

In addition to the San Diego sale in June, RM Auctions will host its annual Sports & Classics of Monterey event in California, August 13 – 14, 2010. Now in its 25th year, RM’s Monterey event was the first and original auction held during the now famous Monterey Classic Car Week.
