The Nissan Skyline is one of Japan’s most important performance-car lineages, but its history is much broader than the GT-R models that made the name internationally famous. The Skyline began as a Prince Motor Company luxury sedan in the 1950s, evolved into a sporting six-cylinder sedan during the 1960s and became one of Japan’s defining performance cars through successive generations of coupes, sedans and homologation specials. Over time, the Skyline incorporated increasingly sophisticated turbocharged engines, electronic all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and advanced chassis electronics, culminating in the R32, R33 and R34 GT-Rs that established the car’s global reputation.
The Skyline story is also one of gradual transformation. Early cars were conventional front-engine, rear-drive sedans, while later GT-Rs became highly complex all-wheel-drive performance machines. The famous RB26DETT twin-turbo straight-six, introduced in the R32 GT-R, became one of the most celebrated Japanese engines ever produced, while Nissan’s ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system and Super-HICAS rear steering gave the later GT-Rs an unusually sophisticated chassis for their era.
For collectors, the Skyline name can mean everything from a modest four-cylinder family sedan to a factory-built Group A homologation special. Understanding the generation, engine, drivetrain, trim level and whether the car is a genuine GT-R or a converted lesser model is therefore essential.
Prince Origins
The Skyline name originated with Prince Motor Company, not Nissan. The first Prince Skyline appeared in 1957 as an upscale Japanese sedan powered by a four-cylinder engine. It was intended more as a refined family and executive car than as a performance model, but the Skyline’s sporting identity began developing during the following generation.
Prince had strong engineering ambitions and a reputation for advanced design. The company’s involvement in motorsport helped shape the Skyline into something more than an ordinary sedan, especially once larger six-cylinder engines entered the picture.
Nissan merged with Prince in 1966, after which the Skyline became part of Nissan’s model range. Even so, the Prince engineering influence remained deeply embedded in the car’s development.
The S50 Skyline and the Birth of a Performance Reputation
The second-generation S50 Skyline, introduced in the early 1960s, became an important turning point. Prince created the Skyline 2000GT by extending the engine bay to accommodate a larger six-cylinder engine from the Prince Gloria.
This modification was driven in part by motorsport. The resulting cars competed successfully against imported machinery and helped establish the Skyline’s reputation as a serious sporting sedan.
The six-cylinder Skyline concept would become central to the model’s identity for decades. From this point forward, high-performance Skylines were increasingly associated with inline-six power and rear-wheel drive.
Nissan Takes Control
When Nissan absorbed Prince in 1966, the Skyline became a Nissan product, though engineering continuity remained strong. The next generation would introduce the styling and mechanical foundation for the first GT-R.
This period also established a pattern that would continue through much of Skyline history: ordinary sedans and coupes formed the base range, while increasingly specialized performance models occupied the top.
1968: C10 Skyline
The C10 Skyline, introduced in 1968, is the generation most enthusiasts identify by the Japanese nickname Hakosuka, loosely derived from “box” and “Skyline.” Its upright, squared-off body has become one of the most recognizable shapes in Japanese classic-car culture.
The C10 was available with multiple engines and body styles, but the high-performance six-cylinder versions transformed the Skyline’s image. Rear-wheel drive, relatively compact dimensions and increasingly powerful engines made it a natural basis for motorsport.
1969 Skyline GT-R
The first Skyline GT-R appeared in 1969 as the PGC10 four-door sedan. It used the remarkable S20 2.0-liter twin-cam inline-six, an engine closely related to the powerplant used in the Nissan R380 racing prototype.
The S20 featured dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and triple carburetors, extremely sophisticated technology for a Japanese production car of the late 1960s. Output was around 160 horsepower, but the engine’s ability to rev freely and deliver power at high engine speeds was more important than the raw number.
The GT-R also received upgraded suspension, brakes and other performance equipment. It was designed with competition clearly in mind.
1971 KPGC10 Coupe GT-R
In 1971, the GT-R moved to the KPGC10 two-door coupe body. This version became the definitive Hakosuka GT-R and is now one of the most valuable Japanese collector cars.
The coupe retained the S20 engine and rear-wheel-drive layout but combined them with a lighter, more sporting body. Wider wheels, flared rear arches and competition-inspired trim gave it a much more aggressive appearance than the standard Skyline.
The Hakosuka GT-R achieved extensive success in Japanese touring-car racing, creating the competition reputation that later Skyline GT-Rs would revive.
Hakosuka Racing Success
The first-generation GT-R became dominant in Japanese domestic racing during the early 1970s. Nissan promoted a long series of victories, and the car became strongly associated with the company’s motorsport identity.
Race versions used wider wheels, stripped interiors, engine tuning and chassis modifications, but the underlying production car was already designed around a high-revving competition-oriented engine.
This history gives genuine KPGC10 GT-Rs exceptional collector significance. Many ordinary C10 Skylines have been modified to resemble GT-Rs, making chassis identification extremely important.
1972: C110 “Kenmeri” Skyline
The C110 Skyline arrived in 1972 with a larger, more flowing body. Enthusiasts commonly refer to this generation as Kenmeri, a nickname derived from Nissan’s famous Japanese advertising campaign featuring characters named Ken and Mary.
The C110 retained the basic Skyline formula of rear-wheel drive and six-cylinder power in higher-specification versions. The styling became more American-influenced, with a fastback coupe body and distinctive round taillights.
Those round taillights would become one of the most enduring visual signatures of later Skylines.
1973 KPGC110 GT-R
A GT-R version of the C110 was introduced as the KPGC110. It retained the S20 twin-cam six from the previous GT-R but arrived at exactly the wrong moment.
Changing emissions regulations and the oil crisis sharply reduced the market for high-performance cars. Only a very small number of Kenmeri GT-Rs were built before production ended.
Unlike the Hakosuka, the KPGC110 GT-R never developed a significant factory racing career. Its rarity rather than competition success makes it one of the most valuable Skyline variants today.
GT-R Disappears
After the KPGC110, Nissan retired the GT-R badge for more than fifteen years. The Skyline continued to evolve through several generations, but performance models used other names and engine combinations.
This long gap is important because it separates the original twin-cam S20-era GT-Rs from the later turbocharged all-wheel-drive cars. The R32 GT-R of 1989 was not simply another annual update; it was a deliberate revival of a historically important performance badge.
C210 Skyline
The late-1970s C210 Skyline moved the range further toward contemporary luxury and emissions-era engineering. Naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines remained important, but turbocharging began entering the Skyline story.
In 1980 Nissan introduced a turbocharged Skyline, helping establish forced induction as a central part of future high-performance models. The technology was still relatively simple compared with later electronically managed systems, but it marked a major change in direction.
R30 Skyline
The R30 Skyline, introduced in 1981, is one of the most distinctive pre-GT-R-revival generations. Its angular styling, thin pillars and broad range of engines made it popular in both road and competition forms.
The most important performance model was the RS, powered by Nissan’s FJ20 four-cylinder engine rather than an inline-six. The engine displaced 2.0 liters, used dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder and represented some of Nissan’s most advanced engine technology at the time.
Skyline RS and FJ20
Early Skyline RS models used the naturally aspirated FJ20E, while later cars received the turbocharged FJ20ET. Turbo versions produced significantly more power and helped return the Skyline to serious performance territory.
The ultimate versions became increasingly aggressive in appearance, especially the RS-X and the cars popularly known as “Iron Mask” Skylines because of their distinctive grille-less front styling.
These cars are important because they bridged the gap between the early GT-Rs and the later RB-powered Skylines.
R30 Motorsport
The R30 participated extensively in Japanese touring-car and silhouette racing. Highly modified competition versions bore only partial mechanical resemblance to road cars but helped maintain the Skyline’s performance image.
The R30 also gained considerable cultural recognition through Japanese television and motorsport. Today, clean turbocharged RS models are increasingly collectible, especially in markets where they were never officially sold.
R31 Skyline
The R31 Skyline, introduced in 1985, brought the model closer to the architecture that would define the R32. It was available as sedan, coupe and other body configurations and introduced Nissan’s new RB-series inline-six engines.
This engine family would become one of the most important in Skyline history.
The R31 also introduced HICAS, Nissan’s early rear-wheel-steering system, on selected models. This technology would later evolve into Super-HICAS and become a defining feature of high-performance R32, R33 and R34 Skylines.
RB Engines Arrive
The RB engine family used an inline-six layout with an iron block and aluminum cylinder head. Early versions included naturally aspirated and turbocharged 2.0-liter engines.
The turbocharged RB20DET became particularly important. With dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and electronic fuel injection, it formed the basis for much of Nissan’s high-performance six-cylinder development during the late 1980s.
The RB architecture was strong, compact and capable of supporting substantial increases in power, qualities that later made RB-powered Skylines extremely popular with tuners.
R31 GTS-R
The R31 GTS-R was a limited-production homologation model created for Group A touring-car racing. It used a specially developed version of the RB20DET with revised turbocharging, exhaust and other performance components.
Production was deliberately limited, making genuine GTS-Rs particularly desirable today. The model is historically significant because it demonstrated Nissan’s renewed commitment to touring-car competition shortly before the GT-R name returned.
1989: R32 Skyline
The R32 Skyline arrived in 1989 and fundamentally changed the model’s reputation. The range included naturally aspirated and turbocharged rear-wheel-drive models, but the major story was the return of the GT-R.
Nissan engineered the R32 GT-R specifically around Group A touring-car regulations. Rather than building a conventional sports coupe and then adapting it for racing, Nissan designed the drivetrain, engine and chassis with motorsport in mind.
The resulting car became one of the defining Japanese performance automobiles of the era.
R32 GT-R
The BNR32 GT-R used the legendary RB26DETT, a 2.6-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six with dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and individual throttle bodies.
Under the JMA (Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association) self-imposed limit, advertised power was capped at 280 PS (206 kW). Stock R32s produced near 290–300 hp, while late-model R34 GT-Rs produced closer to 320–330 hp at the flywheel despite the official catalog rating remaining at 280 PS.
In reality, the RB26 was engineered with substantial performance potential. Competition versions produced far more power, and road engines became famous for responding to increased boost, improved intake and exhaust systems and internal modifications.
The engine used an iron block for strength and an aluminum cylinder head. Twin turbochargers fed the engine, while a large front-mounted intercooler helped control intake temperatures.
ATTESA E-TS All-Wheel Drive
The R32 GT-R’s most important chassis technology was ATTESA E-TS, Nissan’s electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system. Under normal conditions the system could operate with a strong rear-drive bias, preserving the handling feel of a rear-wheel-drive car.
When sensors detected wheel slip or differences in rotational speed, hydraulic control could send torque to the front wheels. The amount varied dynamically rather than being fixed.
This gave the GT-R exceptional traction without making it feel like a conventional permanently locked all-wheel-drive car. ATTESA became central to the GT-R identity.
Super-HICAS
The R32 also used Super-HICAS, an electronically controlled evolution of Nissan’s rear-steering system. At certain speeds and steering conditions, the rear wheels could steer slightly to improve response and stability.
The system was technically sophisticated but became controversial among enthusiasts. Some drivers appreciate the factory behavior, while others disable HICAS for track use or to simplify the car.
For collectors, an intact original system generally contributes to authenticity even if modified cars may feel more predictable under aggressive driving.
R32 Group A Dominance
The R32 GT-R’s competition success was extraordinary. In Japanese Group A touring-car racing, the car became so dominant that it effectively overwhelmed the category.
It also achieved major success in Australia, where its combination of turbo power and all-wheel drive challenged traditional V8 touring cars. Australian media and competitors famously associated the car with the nickname “Godzilla,” a reference to its Japanese origin and overwhelming performance.
The nickname became inseparable from the GT-R internationally.
R32 Nismo
The R32 GT-R Nismo was created to homologate competition components for Group A racing. Changes included aerodynamic revisions and mechanical features intended to improve racing suitability.
Nismo cars were built in limited numbers and are highly collectible. Authenticity is especially important because standard R32 GT-Rs can be modified to resemble Nismo versions.
R32 V-Spec
Later R32 GT-Rs included V-Spec and V-Spec II variants. These incorporated upgraded brakes, wheels and other chassis equipment influenced by competition experience.
V-Spec cars became an important pattern in GT-R development. Later generations would continue using the designation for higher-performance configurations.
R33 Skyline
The R33 Skyline arrived in the early 1990s with a larger body and longer wheelbase than the R32. Some enthusiasts initially regarded it as less aggressive, but the R33 was more refined and benefited from substantial chassis development.
Rear-wheel-drive models included naturally aspirated and turbocharged six-cylinder engines, while the GT-R returned with an improved version of the RB26DETT and a more advanced ATTESA system.
R33 GT-R
The BCNR33 GT-R retained the RB26DETT and six-speed? Actually standard R33 GT-R used a five-speed manual transmission, paired with refined all-wheel-drive and rear-steering systems. Power remained officially rated at around 280 PS, but mechanical and electronic improvements broadened the car’s performance envelope.
The R33 was engineered heavily around high-speed stability. Its longer wheelbase and revised suspension gave it a more settled feel than the R32, particularly on fast circuits.
Nissan demonstrated this development at the Nürburgring, where the R33 GT-R achieved a notable production-car lap time and became the first production road car to break an important eight-minute benchmark claimed by Nissan. Driven by Dirk Schoysman in 1995, a pre-production/prototype R33 GT-R V-Spec posted a lap time of 7:59.887. It was widely marketed by Nissan as the first production-based Japanese car to break 8 minutes at the Nordschleife.
Active-LSD and ATTESA Development
Some R33 GT-R variants used ATTESA E-TS Pro, integrating more sophisticated torque distribution with an electronically controlled rear differential. Rather than relying only on front-to-rear torque transfer, the system could influence rear-axle behavior as well.
This represented a major step toward the increasingly electronic chassis management found in later GT-Rs.
R33 V-Spec
The R33 GT-R V-Spec incorporated ATTESA E-TS Pro and other performance-oriented chassis equipment. It was intended as a more capable circuit-focused version without losing road usability.
V-Spec cars generally command more collector interest than standard GT-Rs, particularly when original and unmodified.
R33 Nismo 400R
The Nismo 400R is one of the most important R33 derivatives. Developed by Nismo, it used a heavily modified RB-X GT2 engine derived from the RB26 but enlarged to approximately 2.8 liters.
Output was around 400 PS, far beyond the official rating of the standard GT-R. The car also received extensive suspension, braking, aerodynamic and body modifications.
Only a very small number were produced, making genuine 400Rs among the most valuable modern Skylines.
R33 GT-R LM and Competition Cars
Nissan also developed R33-based competition cars for international GT racing, including Le Mans efforts. These cars differed substantially from production GT-Rs but demonstrated Nissan’s continued desire to establish the Skyline beyond domestic touring-car competition.
Competition-derived bodywork and liveries later inspired numerous replicas, so genuine racing provenance is essential when evaluating historic cars.
1998: R34 Skyline
The R34 Skyline, introduced in 1998, returned to a more compact and angular shape after the larger R33. The proportions were tighter, the body more muscular and the styling much closer to what enthusiasts expected from a high-performance Skyline.
The range again included sedans and coupes with naturally aspirated and turbocharged RB engines. The most popular non-GT-R performance model was the 25GT Turbo, powered by the single-turbo RB25DET NEO.
R34 25GT Turbo
The rear-wheel-drive R34 25GT Turbo, commonly associated with the GT-T designation, became one of the most popular Skyline models for tuning. Its RB25DET NEO engine produced strong performance while avoiding the greater mechanical complexity of the GT-R’s twin-turbo all-wheel-drive system.
These cars have often been modified to resemble GT-Rs. Wide-body conversions, GT-R bumpers, wings and badges are common, making chassis-code verification essential.
A genuine GT-R is fundamentally different underneath and cannot be identified reliably by appearance alone.
R34 GT-R
The BNR34 GT-R, introduced in 1999, represented the final evolution of the classic RB26-powered Skyline GT-R. It retained the twin-turbo 2.6-liter RB26DETT but incorporated improved turbochargers, engine management, chassis electronics and cooling.
A major drivetrain change was the Getrag six-speed manual transmission, replacing the five-speed units used in the R32 and R33 GT-Rs. The closer ratios and stronger gearbox better suited the engine’s performance potential.
Official power remained approximately 280 PS, though actual output was widely understood to exceed that figure in some specifications.
R34 Multi-Function Display
One of the R34 GT-R’s most distinctive interior features is its Multi-Function Display, mounted prominently in the center of the dashboard. It could display information such as boost pressure, oil temperature and other performance data.
Some versions offered additional display functions, and Nismo equipment expanded the system further. The display reinforced the R34’s technology-focused personality and has become one of the car’s signature interior details.
R34 ATTESA E-TS Pro
The R34 further refined the GT-R’s electronically controlled drivetrain. V-Spec models used ATTESA E-TS Pro, coordinating torque distribution and the active rear differential to improve traction and cornering behavior.
The car remained strongly rear-biased in feel but could deploy the front tires when required. This combination of rear-drive handling characteristics and all-wheel-drive traction became one of the fundamental traits of the GT-R.
R34 V-Spec and V-Spec II
The V-Spec added chassis and aerodynamic upgrades, including a more sophisticated all-wheel-drive system and underbody aerodynamic elements.
The later V-Spec II incorporated further revisions, including changes to suspension and hood construction. These cars are highly sought after, particularly in original condition.
R34 Nür
Near the end of R34 production, Nissan introduced the V-Spec II Nür and M-Spec Nür. The Nür name referenced the Nürburgring and identified cars equipped with a specially developed version of the RB26 using components related to Nissan’s N1 competition engines.
These cars were produced in limited numbers and have become among the most valuable regular-production R34 variants.
The Nür versions are particularly desirable because they combine final-year production, specialized engine components and extremely limited availability.
M-Spec
The M-Spec emphasized greater road comfort while retaining GT-R performance. It featured softer suspension tuning and more luxurious interior treatment.
This makes it an interesting contrast to the more track-focused V-Spec. Collectors increasingly appreciate the M-Spec because it demonstrates the breadth of Nissan’s GT-R development rather than simply chasing lap times.
N1 Versions
Nissan produced N1 versions of several GT-R generations to support motorsport. These cars typically omitted unnecessary luxury equipment and incorporated mechanical features better suited to racing.
The N1 engine specifications could include strengthened or competition-oriented components, while the body might omit items such as rear wipers or certain comfort features depending on generation.
Because N1 cars were built in limited numbers and many were actually raced, surviving original examples are especially significant.
Nismo R34 Z-Tune
The Nismo Z-Tune represents the ultimate factory-associated development of the R34. Created after normal R34 production had ended, Nismo acquired selected used R34 GT-R chassis and rebuilt them extensively.
The cars used a highly developed 2.8-liter RB28DETT engine producing around 500 horsepower, along with major suspension, braking, body and structural modifications. Carbon-fiber body components and extensive chassis reinforcement made the Z-Tune far more than a tuned standard GT-R.
Only a tiny number were completed. Genuine Z-Tunes now occupy the absolute top tier of modern Skyline collecting. Nismo produced exactly 19 units (plus 1 prototype/Z-tune #000) of the Z-Tune. All were built using hand-selected, late-model BNR34 GT-R donor cars with fewer than 30,000 km (18,600 miles) on the odometer.
The RB26DETT
The RB26DETT became the mechanical symbol of the modern Skyline GT-R. Its 2.6-liter displacement was influenced by Group A regulations, where forced-induction equivalency formulas effectively placed it into a larger competition class.
The engine used a cast-iron block, aluminum DOHC 24-valve cylinder head, six individual throttle bodies and two turbochargers. Its robust construction allowed competition versions to operate at much higher outputs than the official road-car rating.
That durability also made the RB26 a favorite among tuners. Modified road engines producing 500, 600 or considerably more horsepower became common, though reliability depends greatly on build quality and supporting modifications.
RB26 Oil-System Concerns
High-performance and heavily modified RB26 engines can suffer oiling issues, particularly during sustained high-rpm use. Oil-pump drive design, oil control and crankcase ventilation have all received extensive attention from specialists.
Later engines incorporated revisions, and competition builds frequently use upgraded oil pumps, crank collars, baffling and other modifications.
For collectors, extensive engine modification should be evaluated carefully. A highly modified RB26 may produce spectacular performance but can be far removed from its original specification.
Ceramic Turbochargers
Many standard RB-powered Skylines used turbochargers with lightweight ceramic turbine components. These help provide quick response but can become fragile when boost pressure and exhaust temperature are increased substantially.
Modified cars frequently receive steel-wheel or aftermarket turbochargers. Such upgrades can improve durability at higher output but reduce originality.
Knowing whether a car retains its factory turbochargers is therefore relevant to both collectors and buyers interested in future modifications.
RB25DET
The RB25DET powered numerous rear-wheel-drive Skyline performance models, particularly the R33 and R34. With 2.5 liters of displacement and a single turbocharger, it delivered strong torque and simpler packaging than the RB26.
Later NEO versions received revised cylinder-head and combustion technology. These engines are highly tunable and make models such as the R34 25GT Turbo attractive alternatives to the increasingly expensive GT-R.
Rear-Wheel-Drive Skylines
Not every high-performance Skyline is a GT-R. Turbocharged GTS, GTS-t and GT-T models retained rear-wheel drive and often weighed less than their all-wheel-drive counterparts.
These cars offer a different driving experience, with more traditional throttle-adjustable handling and simpler drivetrains. They are also historically important because they represent the mainstream sporting Skyline rather than the specialized homologation flagship.
As GT-R prices have risen, clean rear-drive turbo models have attracted growing collector interest.
Four-Door Skylines
The Skyline began as a sedan, and four-door versions remained part of the range throughout much of its history. Some were basic family cars, while others combined turbocharged six-cylinder engines with practical four-door bodies.
Performance sedans such as certain R32, R33 and R34 variants provide much of the mechanical character of the coupes without the GT-R styling or collector premium.
Because many have been modified or drifted, finding an original high-specification sedan can now be surprisingly difficult.
Drift Culture
Rear-wheel-drive Skylines became extremely popular in drifting, particularly R32, R33 and R34 turbo models. The strong RB engines, relatively long wheelbases and readily modified suspension systems made them effective competition and street drift cars.
This popularity had a major effect on survival rates. Many cars were heavily modified, crashed or stripped for parts.
Consequently, originality is becoming increasingly significant even for models that were once considered ordinary used performance cars.
Racing Beyond Japan
The Skyline GT-R’s racing reputation extends beyond Japan. R32 GT-Rs competed successfully in Australian touring-car racing and other international series, while later generations participated in GT racing and endurance events.
Regulation changes often forced Nissan to modify or eventually abandon certain configurations, but motorsport remained central to the GT-R’s development philosophy.
The road cars benefited directly from this experience in areas such as braking, turbocharger development, aerodynamics and drivetrain control.
Round Taillights
Four round rear lamps became one of the Skyline’s most recognizable styling themes. Though not present in identical form on every generation, the motif appeared repeatedly and became strongly associated with performance Skylines. The R32, R33 and R34 coupes each used variations of the four-round-light arrangement, reinforcing visual continuity despite substantial changes in body design.
Later Nissan GT-R models continued the theme even after the Skyline and GT-R names were separated.
Skyline Versus GT-R
One of the most important collector distinctions is that Skyline does not automatically mean GT-R. The GT-R was only the highest-performance version during selected generations.
A rear-wheel-drive R34 25GT Turbo, for example, is still a genuine Skyline but is mechanically very different from a BNR34 GT-R. It lacks the RB26DETT, ATTESA E-TS drivetrain, GT-R suspension architecture and numerous structural and body differences. Because GT-R body conversions are common, VIN and chassis codes are essential for identification.
Chassis Codes
Skyline enthusiasts often identify models by chassis code rather than simply model name. BNR32, BCNR33 and BNR34, for example, identify GT-R generations and communicate important drivetrain information. Lesser models use different codes depending on engine, drivetrain and body style. Learning these codes is one of the best ways to distinguish genuine factory configurations from conversions.
For high-value cars, chassis identification should always be checked against official documentation rather than relying on badges or exterior appearance.
Modifications
Few performance cars have been modified as extensively as the Skyline. Turbochargers, intercoolers, exhaust systems, engine computers, suspension, brakes, wheels and bodywork are frequently replaced. The RB engines can support enormous performance increases, making modification tempting. Cars producing two or three times factory output are not unusual. For a driver, well-engineered upgrades may be desirable. For an important Nismo, Nür, N1 or early GT-R, however, originality has become increasingly valuable.
Rust and Corrosion
Older Skylines can suffer significant corrosion, particularly C10 and C110 cars. Floors, rocker panels, wheel arches, suspension mounting points and window surrounds deserve close inspection. R32 cars can also rust around rear wheel arches, jacking points, sills and structural seams. R33 and R34 cars generally fare better but are not immune, especially in wet or coastal climates. Imported cars should be inspected underneath rather than judged solely by exterior paint.
Accident Damage
Skylines have frequently been driven hard, raced, drifted and modified. Accident repair is therefore common. On GT-Rs, suspension pickup points, front frame rails, rear structure and floorpan alignment should be inspected carefully. A visually attractive car may still have substantial hidden damage. Because original body panels and structural sections are becoming expensive, high-quality undamaged shells increasingly command a premium.
Japanese-Market Specification
Most historically significant Skylines were built primarily for the Japanese domestic market. Many were never officially sold new in the United States or Europe. This means imported cars can vary considerably in documentation and condition. Mileage verification can be difficult, especially when instrument clusters have been changed. Original Japanese service records, auction sheets and ownership documentation can therefore add substantial value.
Understanding the Major Nissan Skyline Variants
The principal Skyline variants can be summarized as follows:
- Prince Skyline: Original luxury-oriented Skyline models produced before Nissan absorbed Prince.
- S50 Skyline 2000GT: Early six-cylinder performance Skyline that established the model’s sporting reputation.
- C10 Hakosuka GT-R: First GT-R generation, using the S20 twin-cam 2.0-liter six and achieving major Japanese touring-car success.
- KPGC10 Coupe GT-R: Two-door Hakosuka and one of the most desirable early Japanese performance cars.
- C110 Kenmeri GT-R: Extremely rare second-generation GT-R, also powered by the S20 but produced only briefly.
- R30 RS/RS-X: FJ20-powered performance Skyline, including turbocharged Iron Mask versions.
- R31 GTS-R: Limited-production RB20DET homologation model and important predecessor to the revived GT-R.
- R32 GTS-t: Rear-wheel-drive RB20DET turbo coupe offering much of the Skyline character without GT-R complexity.
- R32 GT-R: RB26DETT-powered all-wheel-drive homologation special that revived the GT-R name and dominated Group A racing.
- R32 Nismo: Limited homologation variant with competition-oriented equipment.
- R32 V-Spec/V-Spec II: Upgraded GT-R variants incorporating improved brakes, wheels and chassis equipment.
- R33 GT-R: Larger, more refined evolution with improved ATTESA and high-speed stability.
- R33 V-Spec: GT-R using ATTESA E-TS Pro and more sophisticated chassis control.
- Nismo 400R: Extremely rare approximately 400-PS R33 derivative using an enlarged 2.8-liter engine and extensive Nismo modifications.
- R34 25GT Turbo: Rear-wheel-drive RB25DET NEO performance model, widely modified and often converted visually into a GT-R.
- R34 GT-R: Final RB26-powered GT-R, with six-speed transmission, sophisticated electronics and iconic Multi-Function Display.
- R34 V-Spec/V-Spec II: More track-focused GT-R variants with upgraded drivetrain, suspension and aerodynamic equipment.
- R34 M-Spec: More road-oriented GT-R emphasizing comfort without abandoning performance.
- R34 Nür: Final limited-production Nürburgring-themed GT-Rs using upgraded N1-related engine components.
- N1 GT-R: Competition-oriented lightweight homologation versions produced in multiple generations.
- Nismo Z-Tune: Ultimate Nismo-developed R34, using a highly modified 2.8-liter engine and extensive chassis and body upgrades.
What Matters to Collectors
For early cars, chassis identity and originality are paramount. Genuine Hakosuka and Kenmeri GT-Rs are rare enough that conversions from lesser Skylines are common. Chassis codes, factory documentation and the presence of correct S20 mechanical components should all be verified.
The KPGC10 Hakosuka GT-R combines racing success, classic styling and historical importance, making it one of the foundational Japanese collector cars. The far rarer KPGC110 Kenmeri GT-R occupies an exceptional category because so few were produced.
Among later generations, condition and modification history are major considerations. R32, R33 and R34 GT-Rs spent many years as relatively affordable performance cars, and enormous numbers were tuned, raced, crashed or modified. A factory-original car with correct engine, turbochargers, wheels, interior and electronics is now increasingly difficult to find.
Special editions command substantial premiums. Genuine Nismo, N1, V-Spec, Nür, 400R and Z-Tune cars must be authenticated carefully because many standard GT-Rs have been modified to imitate them.
The RB26 itself deserves close inspection. Compression, oil pressure, turbocharger condition, engine noise and evidence of aggressive aftermarket tuning can reveal whether an apparently stock car has lived a much harder life.
For imported cars, documentation is especially valuable. Japanese auction records, service history and ownership documents can help establish mileage and accident history.
Collector Hierarchy
At the top of early Skyline collecting are the Hakosuka and Kenmeri GT-Rs, particularly cars with documented competition history or exceptional originality. The Kenmeri is rarer, while the Hakosuka carries much stronger racing provenance.
Among modern GT-Rs, factory special editions dominate. The Nismo 400R, R34 Nür variants and especially the Nismo Z-Tune occupy the highest levels because of extreme rarity and specialized engineering.
The R34 GT-R has become the most internationally recognizable Skyline generation and commands the strongest broad-market demand. V-Spec II and Nür cars are particularly coveted, but exceptionally original standard GT-Rs are also increasingly valuable.
The R32 GT-R has immense historical importance because it revived the GT-R badge and dominated Group A competition. Its relatively larger production numbers kept prices lower for many years, but clean unmodified examples are becoming increasingly collectible.
The R33 GT-R was once overshadowed by the R32 and R34 but is now receiving greater recognition. Its improved chassis, refined ATTESA system and limited-production 400R derivative make it an important part of the GT-R story.
Rear-wheel-drive turbo Skylines remain a separate but increasingly significant market. Cars such as the R32 GTS-t and R34 25GT Turbo offer strong performance and tuning potential without GT-R prices, and originality is becoming increasingly rare.
Driving the Skyline
The driving experience varies enormously across generations. An early Hakosuka GT-R feels like a lightweight classic sports sedan, with a high-revving naturally aspirated engine, rear-wheel drive and relatively simple suspension. Its appeal comes from mechanical immediacy rather than outright speed by modern standards.
An R30 or R31 introduces turbocharged power and more advanced chassis systems but still feels fundamentally analog. Turbo lag is more noticeable, steering is direct and the cars demand greater driver involvement than later electronically managed models.
The R32 GT-R feels radically different. At moderate speeds it behaves much like a rear-wheel-drive performance car, but under hard acceleration the ATTESA system progressively brings the front tires into play. The RB26 builds power with increasing urgency as the turbochargers come on boost, while Super-HICAS sharpens the car’s responses.
The R33 feels more mature and stable, particularly at very high speed. Its longer wheelbase and refined drivetrain make it less nervous than an R32, though some enthusiasts prefer the older car’s more compact feel.
The R34 combines the strengths of both. It is compact enough to feel agile but more sophisticated in its electronics and chassis tuning. The six-speed gearbox keeps the RB26 in its power band, while the Multi-Function Display gives the driver unusually detailed information about what the car is doing.
Rear-wheel-drive turbo models provide a different experience entirely. Without ATTESA, they are lighter and more easily adjusted with the throttle, which explains their popularity in drifting and tuning culture.
Lasting Importance
The Nissan Skyline matters because it traces the evolution of Japanese performance engineering across more than four decades. What began as a Prince luxury sedan became a six-cylinder sports sedan, a touring-car champion, a turbocharged technology showcase and ultimately one of the most sophisticated performance coupes of the 1990s.
The early Hakosuka GT-R established the competition reputation with its S20 twin-cam six. The rare Kenmeri GT-R became a symbol of the performance era interrupted by emissions and fuel concerns. The R30 and R31 rebuilt the Skyline’s turbocharged and motorsport credentials before the R32 GT-R transformed the name completely.
The R32’s combination of RB26DETT power, ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive and Super-HICAS rear steering produced a car capable of dominating touring-car competition while remaining usable on the road. The R33 refined the concept, and the R34 brought it to its most celebrated form with a six-speed gearbox, increasingly sophisticated electronics and some of the most desirable special editions Nissan ever produced.
For collectors, the Skyline is particularly challenging because the cars have been modified so extensively. GT-R clones, engine swaps, turbo upgrades, body conversions and drift use are all common. As values rise, original specification and documented history become increasingly important.
The Skyline’s influence extends far beyond Nissan. It helped establish the idea that a Japanese performance car could combine sophisticated electronics, turbocharged power and motorsport durability without sacrificing everyday usability. The later GT-Rs became benchmarks for an entire generation of enthusiasts and tuners.
Few model families demonstrate the progression from classic sports sedan to electronically controlled all-wheel-drive super coupe as clearly as the Nissan Skyline. From the high-revving S20-powered Hakosuka to the twin-turbo RB26-powered R34 GT-R, the Skyline evolved continuously while retaining a strong connection to competition, engineering innovation and driver-focused performance.
