Introduced for the 1964 model year as the successor to the Porsche 356, the 911 established the basic formula that continues today: a rear-mounted flat-six engine, distinctive fastback profile and an emphasis on combining everyday usability with serious performance.
Early 1964–73 911s, now commonly called the “long-hood” cars, began with a 2.0-liter air-cooled flat-six. Engine displacement and performance steadily increased through 2.2- and 2.4-liter versions, culminating in cars such as the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7, one of the most celebrated early 911s.
For 1974, Porsche substantially redesigned the 911 to meet new U.S. bumper regulations. The resulting 1974–77 cars introduced large aluminum impact bumpers with accordion-style rubber extensions, creating the basic body design that would remain through 1989. These cars generally used 2.7-liter flat-six engines, with numerous versions sold as the 911, 911 S and Carrera depending on year and market. Bosch CIS fuel injection was widely used, although some European Carrera models retained mechanical fuel injection. U.S. emissions equipment and thermal reactors contributed to increased engine temperatures, and the 2.7-liter magnesium-case engines became known for problems including pulled cylinder-head studs when subjected to excessive heat. Properly updated examples can be considerably more reliable.
The 1978 model year brought a significant mechanical upgrade with the introduction of the 911 SC. Its new 3.0-liter aluminum-case flat-six was stronger and more durable than the preceding magnesium-case 2.7. The SC retained Bosch CIS injection and the Type 915 five-speed manual transmission but offered improved torque and drivability. U.S. cars initially produced about 180 horsepower, with output increasing during the model run, while European-market versions generally offered more power. The SC also received wider rear bodywork derived from the Carrera, accommodating wider wheels and tires and giving it a noticeably more muscular stance than most 1974–77 911s.
The 1978–83 SC evolved incrementally. Porsche improved engine management and emissions equipment, while compression ratios and horsepower changed depending on year and market. For 1980, European-market output increased to 188 horsepower (and 204 hp for 1981–83), while U.S.-spec cars remained around 180 horsepower throughout the SC’s run due to strict emissions regulations. The SC was available as a Coupe and Targa throughout production, with the 911 SC Cabriolet arriving for 1983—Porsche’s first production convertible since the 356. Its combination of the stronger 3.0-liter engine, galvanized body construction, relatively simple mechanical systems and classic 911 styling has made the SC one of the most popular entry points into vintage air-cooled 911 ownership.
For 1984, the SC gave way to the Carrera 3.2. A larger 3.2-liter engine and Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection replaced the SC’s CIS system, providing more power, improved fuel economy and better cold-start behavior. Early Carrera 3.2 cars retained the 915 transmission, but for 1987 Porsche introduced the stronger, smoother-shifting G50 five-speed gearbox with a hydraulic clutch.
The 911 series continued in 1989, but Porsche officially referred to the later cars as 964, 993, 996, 997, and 992 models.

1998 Porsche 911 GT1By Jim Schrager · Published October 1, 2003
From any angle and at any speed, it is the perfect picture of what a modern sports prototype should look like After its 1994 Le Mans victory with a decade-old design, Porsche needed a new long-term strategy for its international sports car competition. Enter the 911 GT1. Keeping to the spirit of the regulations, Porsche […]

1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS/RSR 2.9 LightweightBy SCM Web · Published July 1, 2002
Porsche took over in sports car racing where Ferrari left off in the early 1970s. After winning the World Sports Car Championship in 1970, 1971 and 1972, Porsche reacted to the FIA decision to swing from sports-prototypes to more production-based machinery by selecting their eight-year-old street-going 911 to be further developed as a racing car. 1967 Camaro RS/SS ConvertibleBy Carl Bomstead · Published June 1, 2001
In April 1964, Ford introduced the Mustang and started the pony car era. It set sales records that have yet to be broken and caught the powers-that-be at General Motors completely off guard, as they had nothing in their line-up that could compete.A contingent within Chevrolet wanted to counter with a modified Chevy II but […]

Should the Harvard Business School need yet another case study in how a great idea can go counter-clockwise down a toilet if not executed properly, please have them refer to the launch/introduction/sale of the 1991 Lotus Elan Turbo SE in the US. Introduced during the same twelve-month period as the Miata, Geo Metro convertible and […]

1967 Porsche 911S SWB 2.0L CoupeBy SCM Web · Published October 1, 2000
It was evident to Porsche management in the late ’50s that the 356 series was rapidly becoming dated and reaching the end of its development potential, so in 1959 Ferdinand Porsche began designing a new car. A number of criteria were laid down: the car would have no more than a 2,200-mm wheelbase and would […]

1978–83 Porsche 911SCBy Jim Schrager · Published September 1, 2000
Coupe, Targa and Cabriolet While the automotive world suffered through the 1973-1977 era of dramatically tightened emission-control laws, Porsche was busy building, piece by piece, the better mousetrap that would become the 911SC. Starting with the dramatically simplified CIS fuel injection of the ’73½ 911T, the SC included the flared body of the 1974 Carrera, […]

1970-73 Porsche 911SBy Scott Johnston · Published January 1, 2000
The E-type and the 911 share the distinction as two of the most recognizable sports car shapes of all time. Both cars conceptually leapt ahead of the competition when introduced and both had teething troubles in their infancy. But after eight years of production, the E-type had lost its edge and had become somewhat dated, […]

1985 Porsche 911 CabrioletBy SCM Web · Published November 1, 1999
he Porsche 911 is probably the single most recognizable car shape in the world, an instant “Classic.” For those who wanted to feel the wind in their hair while enjoying 911 motoring, Porsche manufactured for many years a “Targa” version of their immortal coupe. This “Targa” incorporated a rollover bar behind the cockpit as crash […]

1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RSLBy SCM Web · Published December 1, 1994
The Carrera RS is one of the most famous Porsche models ever built, and has come over the years to be regarded as one of the top sports cars to emerge from the 1970s. It was designed and built with ambivalence very much in mind: Porsche’s engineers wanted a car that could be successfully used […]
