The Porsche 928 was one of the most ambitious road cars Porsche ever developed. Introduced for 1978 and produced through 1995, it was conceived as a sophisticated front-engine grand tourer that could combine the high-speed ability of a sports car with the comfort, refinement and long-distance usability of a luxury GT. Its architecture was radically different from the rear-engine 911: the 928 used a water-cooled V8 mounted at the front, a rear-mounted transaxle for improved weight distribution, independent suspension at all four corners and an aerodynamic hatchback body built with extensive use of aluminum.

Although Porsche originally expected the 928 to become the company’s primary flagship and possibly even succeed the 911, the two cars ultimately developed very different identities. The 911 remained the more traditional sports car, while the 928 became a fast, refined and technically advanced grand tourer. Over nearly two decades Porsche continually enlarged and developed the V8, improved the suspension, added more sophisticated electronics and transformed the car from a relatively restrained 4.5-liter GT into the 5.4-liter, 345-horsepower 928 GTS.

Development and Design Philosophy

The 928 was developed during the 1970s when Porsche was considering how future safety, emissions and noise regulations might affect the long-term viability of the air-cooled rear-engine 911. Rather than simply redesigning the 911, Porsche created an entirely different type of flagship with a front-mounted engine, rear transaxle and more spacious interior. The result was intended to provide better crash protection, more predictable handling and significantly greater refinement without sacrificing high-speed performance.

The design was unusually integrated for its era. The engine was positioned well behind the front axle centerline, while the gearbox and differential were mounted at the rear, helping the car achieve close to even front-to-rear weight distribution. Porsche combined that balance with a wide track, sophisticated independent suspension and carefully developed aerodynamics, producing a car that was stable at very high speeds while remaining comfortable enough for everyday use.

1978: The Original 928

The first production 928 used a 4.5-liter aluminum V8 with a 90-degree cylinder-bank angle, single overhead camshafts per bank and two valves per cylinder. European-market cars produced roughly 240 horsepower, while U.S.-specification cars were substantially detuned for emissions requirements and generally produced around 219 horsepower. Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection was used, providing more consistent drivability than carburetors while remaining relatively simple by later electronic-injection standards.

A five-speed manual transmission was standard in many markets, while a Mercedes-Benz-derived automatic transmission was also offered and became increasingly popular. Because the gearbox was mounted at the rear, the 928 used a rigid torque tube connecting the engine to the transaxle. This architecture reduced the nose-heavy feel common to many powerful front-engine cars and became one of the 928’s defining mechanical characteristics.

Pasha Interior

One of the most distinctive interior options on early Porsche 928s was the Pasha upholstery pattern, a bold black-and-white geometric design made up of repeating checkerboard-like shapes that create an almost optical-illusion effect. It was offered on seats and, depending on specification, portions of the door panels during the late 1970s and early 1980s, and it has become closely associated with the original 928’s futuristic design. Pasha was also used on some other contemporary Porsche models, but it looks especially appropriate in the 928 because of the car’s highly modern dashboard, pod-style instruments and space-age styling.

Original Pasha interiors are now especially desirable because the fabric is difficult to preserve and expensive to reproduce correctly. Sun fading, torn seat bolsters and replacement upholstery are common, so a well-preserved factory Pasha interior can add considerable collector appeal to an early 928. Reproduction material is available, but correct pattern scale, alignment and installation matter greatly if the car is being restored to original specification.

Aluminum V8 Construction

The 928’s engine was technically advanced for a luxury GT of the late 1970s. Porsche used an aluminum block and cylinder heads to reduce front-end weight, while the compact V8 delivered smooth torque rather than the high-rpm character of the company’s smaller flat-six engines. The original 4.5-liter engine was deliberately conservative in tune, emphasizing durability, drivability and quiet operation.

As the 928 evolved, displacement, compression ratio, cylinder-head design and engine management all changed substantially. Later cars eventually adopted four valves per cylinder and electronic fuel injection, allowing the engine to produce far more power without sacrificing refinement. Despite the changes, the basic V8 architecture remained recognizable throughout the model’s production life.

Rear-Mounted Transaxle

The rear transaxle was central to the 928’s handling. Mounting the transmission and differential at the rear moved substantial mass away from the engine bay and helped distribute weight much more evenly between the axles. This gave the 928 a remarkably neutral feel for a large front-engine car and allowed Porsche to tune the suspension for high-speed stability without excessive understeer.

The torque tube connecting the engine and transmission contains a long driveshaft supported internally by bearings. As these cars age, torque-tube bearings and driveline alignment become important maintenance concerns. Noise or vibration through the center of the car can indicate bearing wear or other driveline problems.

Five-Speed Manual and Automatic Transmissions

Manual 928s used a five-speed rear transaxle, giving the car a more sporting and involving character. The shift linkage is relatively long because the gearbox is located at the rear, so the action feels different from a conventional front-mounted gearbox. A properly adjusted system should still feel positive, but worn linkage bushings can create excessive play.

Automatic versions used robust Mercedes-Benz-derived transmissions adapted to Porsche’s transaxle layout. Automatics became increasingly popular as the 928 moved further into the luxury-GT market, and later cars suit the automatic especially well because of their strong low- and mid-range torque. Manuals are rarer and generally more sought after by collectors, particularly on GT and GTS models.

Independent Front Suspension

The front suspension used unequal-length control arms, coil springs, telescopic dampers and an anti-roll bar. The geometry was designed to provide precise wheel control while maintaining the ride quality expected of a grand tourer.

Porsche also used substantial aluminum suspension components to reduce unsprung weight. When fresh, the steering and front suspension give the 928 surprisingly sharp turn-in for such a large car. Worn ball joints, control-arm bushings and dampers can make the car feel heavy and vague, so suspension condition has a major influence on the driving experience.

The Weissach Rear Axle

One of the 928’s most famous technical features is its Weissach rear axle, an advanced semi-trailing-arm suspension system designed to improve stability during cornering and deceleration. Conventional semi-trailing-arm suspension can allow the rear wheels to change toe in a way that promotes oversteer when the driver suddenly lifts off the throttle. Porsche engineered compliant suspension bushings and carefully controlled geometry so that cornering forces caused the rear wheels to toe slightly inward instead, helping stabilize the car.

This passive rear-steering effect was a major innovation. It allowed the 928 to remain predictable during sudden throttle changes at high speeds, which was especially important for a powerful GT intended to be driven quickly on the autobahn. The concept became strongly associated with the 928 and demonstrated how seriously Porsche approached stability and chassis behavior.

Four-Wheel Disc Brakes

The 928 used four-wheel disc brakes from the beginning, with braking capacity increasing as engine performance rose. Later cars received larger rotors and more powerful calipers, particularly the S4, GT and GTS.

Brake-system condition matters greatly today because many 928s spend long periods unused. Seized calipers, old flexible hoses and contaminated fluid are common, and ABS components on later models can add another layer of complexity. A properly maintained system provides extremely strong stopping ability even by modern classic-car standards.

Body Construction and Aluminum Panels

The 928 used a steel unitized body structure but incorporated aluminum doors, hood and front fenders to reduce weight. This combination kept the structure strong while limiting the mass concentrated at the ends of the car. The body was also heavily galvanized, giving the 928 much better corrosion resistance than many earlier European cars.

Galvanizing does not make the car immune to rust, especially after poor accident repairs. Areas where replacement panels were welded or protective coatings were removed can corrode, and aluminum panels can suffer from oxidation or galvanic corrosion where they contact steel. Because the body is complex and the panel shapes are difficult to reproduce, accident history is especially important.

Aerodynamic Styling

The 928’s shape was extremely modern when introduced. Flush body surfaces, integrated bumpers, a low nose and a large glass hatch were developed together rather than added as separate styling elements. The car’s distinctive exposed pop-up headlights lie flat when retracted and rotate upright when switched on, giving the front end a very different appearance at night.

The wide rear quarters and rounded tail became increasingly aggressive as the model evolved. Early cars are visually clean and understated, while later S4, GT and GTS versions have deeper front and rear bumper treatments, larger spoilers and wider wheels. Despite those changes, the basic shape remained remarkably consistent over nearly eighteen years.

Interior and Grand-Touring Character

The 928 was designed around long-distance comfort to a degree unusual for Porsche at the time. The interior offered supportive seats, substantial sound insulation, climate control and a small rear seating area, making the car more practical than a two-seat exotic. The dashboard and instrument binnacle move with the adjustable steering column on many cars, helping maintain clear gauge visibility as the wheel is repositioned.

Later models added increasing amounts of electrical equipment, power seats, climate-control systems and convenience features. This improved comfort but also created one of the major ownership challenges today: a poorly maintained 928 can have dozens of small electrical problems, while a fully sorted car feels far more luxurious and cohesive.

1980–83: 928 S

The 928 S represented the first major performance step. European versions initially received a larger 4.7-liter V8, with output rising significantly over the original 4.5-liter engine. Depending on year and market, power climbed into the 300-horsepower range in Europe, making the S considerably faster while preserving the original car’s refined character.

Exterior changes were relatively subtle at first, including revised spoilers, wheels and trim. Mechanically, however, the engine, gearing, brakes and suspension continued to evolve. The S transformed the 928 from a quick luxury GT into a genuine high-speed performance car capable of competing with far more exotic machinery.

U.S.-Specification 928 S

American-market development followed a different path because of emissions and fuel requirements. U.S. cars generally produced less power than European versions during the early 1980s, although engine displacement and engine-management technology continued to improve.

These differences matter greatly today because gray-market European cars were imported into the United States in significant numbers during the 1980s. Some were federalized carefully while others received poorly executed emissions, lighting or bumper modifications. Understanding whether a car began life as a U.S.-market or European-market example is therefore important when evaluating originality.

1985: Four-Valve Engine

A major mechanical change arrived in the mid-1980s when Porsche introduced a four-valve-per-cylinder V8 for certain markets. The 5.0-liter engine used dual overhead camshafts on each bank and sixteen additional valves, dramatically improving airflow at higher engine speeds.

North America actually received the 32-valve 5.0L engine (LH-Jetronic) in 1985 (known as the 928 S 32V) before Europe received the 32-valve S4 in 1987. For 1985–1986, Euro-market cars continued with two-valve 4.7L engines (310 PS) using K/KE-Jetronic.

Electronic engine management became increasingly sophisticated at the same time. The four-valve architecture formed the basis of the later S4, GT and GTS engines and represented the biggest fundamental change in the 928 V8’s development.

928 S4

The 928 S4, introduced for the late 1980s, was one of the most important versions of the model. It used a 5.0-liter, 32-valve V8 producing roughly 316 horsepower in many markets, coupled with updated engine management and substantially revised aerodynamics.

The exterior gained smoother front and rear bumper covers, a deeper front spoiler and a larger rear wing integrated into the hatch area. These changes reduced aerodynamic lift and gave the car a cleaner, more modern appearance. The S4 also benefited from upgraded brakes, revised suspension tuning and numerous interior and electrical improvements.

928 S4 Engine and Electronics

The S4 engine used more advanced electronic fuel injection and ignition management than earlier 928s. This improved starting, emissions, throttle response and high-rpm performance, but it also made diagnosis more dependent on sensors, wiring and control modules.

A healthy S4 engine is extremely smooth and powerful, with a broad torque curve and little vibration. Electrical neglect, however, can create difficult intermittent problems, especially when aging wiring, corroded grounds and failing relays interact with the engine-management system.

1989–91: 928 GT

The 928 GT was developed as a more sporting version of the S4. It retained the 5.0-liter four-valve V8 but received revised camshafts, engine management and other tuning changes, raising output to roughly 330 horsepower. The GT was most closely associated with the five-speed manual gearbox and was aimed more directly at enthusiastic drivers.

Suspension tuning was firmer, and the car generally feels more responsive than a standard S4. Because manual transmissions were becoming increasingly uncommon in the 928 range, the GT occupies a special position among collectors who want the most driver-focused version before the arrival of the GTS.

The 928 GT was available in Europe starting in early 1989 (often as a late 1989 option) and lasted through 1991 in North America, overlapping with S4 production before both were replaced globally by the GTS for model year 1992 (Europe) / 1993 (US).

GT Versus S4

The difference between an S4 and GT is more than a badge. The GT’s engine tuning, transmission, limited-slip differential specifications and chassis setup created a more aggressive personality. The S4 remains an excellent high-speed GT, while the GT sacrifices some softness in exchange for stronger response and greater driver involvement.

Authentication matters because S4s can be modified to resemble GTs. Factory equipment, transmission type, engine specification and option codes should all be checked before assuming a car is a genuine GT.

1992–95: 928 GTS

The 928 GTS was the final and most developed version of the model. Displacement increased to approximately 5.4 liters, and output rose to roughly 345 horsepower, accompanied by substantially greater torque. The engine retained the four-valve-per-cylinder architecture but incorporated a larger bore and stroke along with numerous internal revisions.

The GTS also received wider rear bodywork, larger wheels and tires, improved brakes and updated suspension tuning. It is visually distinguishable by its broader rear quarters and more muscular stance, though the fundamental 928 silhouette remained intact.

GTS Chassis and Brakes

The additional performance of the GTS required further chassis development. Wider wheels and tires increased grip, while larger brakes provided greater heat capacity. Suspension tuning was revised to retain stability without making the car excessively harsh.

Despite its size and luxury equipment, a properly sorted GTS remains remarkably capable on a fast road. It does not feel as light or delicate as a 911, but its balance, torque and high-speed composure make it extraordinarily effective.

Manual GTS Cars

The five-speed manual 928 GTS is especially rare and desirable. By the early 1990s most buyers chose the automatic, so manual cars represent only a small proportion of production.

The manual transforms the GTS into a more interactive machine and allows the driver to exploit the V8’s broad power band directly. Because of rarity and enthusiast demand, original manual GTS examples generally command a substantial premium.

Automatic GTS

Automatic GTS models are much more common and arguably fit the original grand-touring mission of the 928 extremely well. The 5.4-liter engine has enough torque that the automatic rarely feels strained, and highway cruising is effortless.

Condition remains more important than transmission choice for many buyers. A well-maintained automatic GTS can be preferable to a neglected manual simply because drivetrain and electrical restoration costs are so high.

Timing Belt and Water Pump

One of the most important maintenance items on later 928 engines is the timing belt. The belt drives the camshafts and must be maintained carefully, along with tensioners, rollers and associated components. Water-pump service is commonly performed at the same time because of the amount of labor required to access the front of the engine.

Service history is crucial. A car with unknown belt age should be treated cautiously until maintenance is verified. Deferred timing-belt service can turn an otherwise good purchase into a very expensive engine repair.

Early Versus Later Engine Designs

Early 4.5- and 4.7-liter engines use simpler two-valve cylinder heads and generally have less complicated engine management. They can be easier to understand mechanically, though parts availability and age-related deterioration remain concerns.

Later 5.0- and 5.4-liter engines produce substantially more power and are smoother and more efficient, but they add more electronics, additional camshafts and greater mechanical complexity. Neither generation is inherently better; they appeal to different owners.

Fuel Injection

Early cars used Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical continuous fuel injection. The system is reliable when clean and properly adjusted, but long storage can cause fuel distributors, injectors and warm-up regulators to stick or corrode.

While early 4.5L cars used mechanical K-Jetronic (or L-Jetronic in US ’80+), the European 1980–1983 4.7L 928 S transitioned to Bosch L-Jetronic (electronic) and later LH-Jetronic (hot-wire air mass metering) in late 1983/1984.

These systems generally provide better drivability but rely more heavily on sensors, computers and electrical connections. Proper diagnosis is essential rather than replacing components at random.

Cooling System

The 928’s large aluminum V8 generates substantial heat, and cooling-system condition is critical. Radiators, water pumps, thermostats, hoses, electric fans and fan-control circuits all need to function correctly.

Overheating should never be regarded as normal. Repeated high temperatures can damage head gaskets, cylinder heads and other expensive components. A car with a history of cooling problems deserves especially close inspection.

Electrical System

Electrical condition is one of the most important aspects of 928 ownership. The car contains numerous relays, control modules, electric motors and grounding points, and age-related corrosion can create problems that seem unrelated.

The central electrical panel and grounds should be inspected carefully. Many strange symptoms—intermittent gauges, lighting failures, starting problems, window issues and climate-control faults—can originate from poor connections rather than failed major components.

Instrument Cluster and Pod

The 928’s instrument cluster is mounted in an adjustable pod that moves with the steering column. This was innovative and gave the driver an unusually clear view of the gauges.

Age can affect wiring, printed circuits, gauge connections and illumination. Restoration is possible, but electrical work should be done carefully because amateur modifications often create additional faults. Climate Control

Climate-control systems became increasingly complex as the model evolved. Vacuum actuators, electrical servos, control valves and sensors all play roles depending on year.

A non-functioning system can require considerable diagnosis, and replacing only the obvious component may not solve the underlying problem. Because the 928 has a large glass area and substantial engine heat, working air conditioning materially affects usability.

Fuel Tank and Fuel Lines

Fuel-system condition is another major concern on older cars. Rubber hoses harden with age, and leaking lines near the engine can create a serious fire hazard.

Fuel pumps, filters and tank components should also be inspected, especially on cars that have sat unused. Old gasoline can damage injection components and create expensive drivability problems.

Flexplate and Thrust-Bearing Issues

Automatic 928s deserve inspection for flexplate preload and crankshaft thrust-bearing problems, an issue that has become well known among specialists. Improper driveline loading can place axial pressure on the crankshaft, potentially causing severe engine damage if ignored.

Checking crankshaft endplay and ensuring proper flexplate adjustment is therefore an important part of a pre-purchase inspection on automatic cars. This is a specialized 928 concern and one reason familiarity with the model matters greatly when choosing a mechanic.

Torque-Tube Bearings

The torque tube contains bearings that support the long driveshaft between engine and transaxle. As these bearings age, they can produce rumbling, vibration or a characteristic whine.

Replacement is labor intensive because much of the driveline must be disturbed. Noise through the center tunnel should therefore be investigated before purchase rather than assumed to be normal.

Suspension Wear

The 928’s handling depends heavily on correct suspension geometry. Worn control-arm bushings, ball joints, rear suspension links or dampers can substantially change the car’s behavior.

Because the Weissach axle relies on controlled bushing compliance to produce its passive steering effect, replacing components with incorrect aftermarket parts can alter the intended geometry. Quality parts and proper alignment are especially important.

The mechanical key to the Weissach-Achse (Weissach Axle) was split front pivot bushings on the semi-trailing arm linked to a modified lateral link. Forces under overrun/deceleration compress the forward rubber bushing, pulling the leading edge of the rear wheel inward (creating toe-in to counter trailing-throttle oversteer).

Steering System

Most 928s use power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. When functioning correctly it provides a good balance of effort and precision without feeling excessively isolated.

Leaks from power-steering hoses and racks are common with age. Worn rack mounts or suspension components can also create steering play that is sometimes mistakenly blamed on the rack itself.

Brake and ABS Systems

Later cars added anti-lock braking, improving stability under hard braking. The hydraulic systems are generally strong, but ABS sensors, wiring and control units can develop age-related faults.

The warning lights should function correctly at startup and extinguish as intended. A seller who has simply removed or disabled a warning bulb may be hiding a much more expensive problem.

Wheels and Tires

Wheel sizes increased significantly during the 928’s production life. Early cars wore relatively modest wheels and tires, while S4, GT and GTS models used progressively wider combinations.

Correct wheels are important both cosmetically and dynamically. Aftermarket wheels with incorrect offset can interfere with suspension geometry, increase steering effort or place additional loads on wheel bearings.

“Phone Dial” Wheels

Another distinctive visual feature of early Porsche 928s is the phone dial” alloy wheel, named for the series of large circular holes around its face that resemble the finger openings in an old rotary telephone dial. The design complemented the 928’s clean, futuristic styling and became one of the most recognizable Porsche wheel designs of the late 1970s and 1980s. Early 928s typically used relatively narrow 15-inch versions, while later applications varied in size, width and offset as Porsche increased tire sizes and developed the chassis.

Original phone dial wheels contribute to the period-correct appearance of an early 928 and are increasingly appreciated by collectors, particularly on otherwise original cars. Because similar-looking phone dial wheels were fitted to several Porsche models and were produced in different dimensions and offsets, the presence of the design alone does not establish that a wheel is correct for a particular 928. Casting numbers, dimensions and offset markings should be checked when originality matters, and wheels should also be inspected for bends, cracks, corrosion and damage from improper refinishing.

Interior Condition

The 928 interior is expensive to restore properly. Leather seats, dashboard coverings, carpets, headliners and door trim can all deteriorate from heat and sun exposure.

Cracked dashboards and worn seat bolsters are common. Because replacement materials and correct patterns can be costly, an original well-preserved interior adds considerable appeal.

Rear Hatch and Cargo Area

The large glass hatch gives the 928 surprising luggage capacity and makes it one of the more practical high-performance GT cars of its era. The folding rear seats increase cargo space further.

Hatch seals, locks and release mechanisms should be checked carefully. Water leaks can damage interior trim and electrical components in the rear of the car.

Accident Damage and Body Alignment

The 928’s mixture of steel structure and aluminum outer panels makes collision repair specialized. Aluminum doors, fenders and hoods cannot always be repaired using the same techniques as steel panels.

Panel gaps and alignment should be inspected closely, particularly around the pop-up headlights, hood, doors and hatch. Poor repairs can be difficult and expensive to correct.

Rust and Corrosion

Because the body shell was extensively galvanized, severe rust is less common than on many contemporary cars. Nevertheless, corrosion can occur around accident repairs, battery areas, window openings and locations where protective coatings have been damaged.

Aluminum panels can also corrode, especially where dissimilar metals meet. Bubbling beneath paint should be investigated rather than assumed to be superficial.

Common Modifications

Many 928s have received aftermarket exhausts, wheels, stereo systems, suspension upgrades and engine-management modifications. Some changes improve usability, but originality is becoming increasingly important as collector interest grows.

Performance modifications should be judged by their quality and reversibility. Cutting wiring harnesses or modifying bodywork generally hurts value more than bolt-on upgrades that can easily be removed.

Understanding the Major Porsche 928 Variants

The principal versions can be summarized as follows:

  • 928: Original 4.5-liter two-valve V8 model, visually clean and mechanically the simplest version.
  • 928 S: Higher-performance evolution, initially using a larger 4.7-liter engine and progressively improved suspension, brakes and aerodynamics.
  • Later 928 S / Four-Valve Cars: Transitional models adopting larger 5.0-liter engines and four-valve cylinder heads in selected markets.
  • 928 S4: Major late-1980s update with 5.0-liter 32-valve V8, approximately 316 horsepower and substantially revised aerodynamic bodywork.
  • 928 GT: More driver-focused version of the S4 with approximately 330 horsepower, firmer chassis tuning and strong association with the five-speed manual.
  • 928 GTS: Final 5.4-liter evolution with approximately 345 horsepower, wider rear bodywork, larger brakes and the highest overall performance of the standard production series.
  • Manual-Transmission 928: Less common throughout much of production and generally more desirable to enthusiasts.
  • Automatic 928: More numerous and well suited to the model’s luxury-GT mission, particularly in later high-torque versions.
  • European-Specification Cars: Often more powerful than contemporary U.S. cars during the early years and sometimes imported privately.
  • U.S.-Specification Cars: Built to American emissions and safety requirements, with engine output and exterior details varying significantly by year.

What Matters to Collectors

The most important consideration is maintenance history. A 928 can appear inexpensive compared with other high-performance Porsches, but neglected examples can require extraordinary amounts of money to restore. Timing-belt history, cooling-system condition, fuel-system maintenance, electrical repairs and suspension work should all be documented whenever possible.

For automatic cars, crankshaft endplay and flexplate condition deserve specific attention. Torque-tube noise should also be investigated because bearing replacement is labor intensive. On later cars, warning lights for ABS, airbags or engine management should work properly rather than having been disabled to conceal faults.

Originality is becoming increasingly important. Factory wheels, correct interior trim, original engine-management equipment and unmodified wiring all add value. A well-maintained original car is usually preferable to one that has been heavily modified or cosmetically restored while mechanical systems remain neglected.

Manual-transmission cars generally command a premium because they are significantly less common and offer greater driver involvement. This is particularly true of GT and GTS manuals, which combine rarity with the strongest versions of the 928 drivetrain.

The GTS sits near the top of the regular production hierarchy because of its 5.4-liter engine, wider body and limited production. The GT is also increasingly desirable because of its manual-focused specification and more sporting tuning. Early cars appeal to collectors who value the purity of the original shape and simpler mechanical specification.

Collector Hierarchy

The rarest and most desirable roadgoing 928s are generally manual-transmission GTS models, followed closely by exceptional 928 GTs and highly original low-mileage late-production cars. These versions combine rarity, performance and enthusiast appeal.

Well-preserved early 4.5-liter cars are becoming more interesting as collectors increasingly appreciate the purity of the original design. Early European-specification examples with higher-output engines can also be desirable, provided their histories and importation are well documented.

S4s remain among the best choices for owners who want the mature 928 experience without GTS prices. They offer much of the later car’s performance and refinement while being more readily available.

Condition can outweigh model hierarchy. A thoroughly documented S4 with excellent mechanical condition may be far more desirable to own than a neglected GTS requiring major engine, electrical and suspension work.

Driving the Porsche 928

The first impression is how unlike a 911 the car feels. The 928 is wider, quieter and more substantial, with a long hood ahead of the driver and much greater isolation from engine and road noise. Yet the steering and chassis remain distinctly Porsche in their precision.

At low speeds the car feels like a luxury GT, especially with an automatic transmission. The V8 produces strong torque without demanding high rpm, and the suspension absorbs poor pavement better than many contemporary sports cars. As speed rises, however, the balance provided by the rear transaxle becomes increasingly obvious.

The 928 feels exceptionally stable in fast sweeping corners. The Weissach rear axle helps keep the rear of the car composed when the driver lifts the throttle, while the wide track and near-even weight distribution allow the car to change direction with far less reluctance than its size suggests. It does not have the light, immediate character of a 911, but it is remarkably neutral and confidence inspiring.

Engine character changes substantially by version. Early 4.5-liter cars are smooth and relatively relaxed, the 4.7-liter S adds noticeably stronger performance, and the 32-valve S4 and GT engines pull much harder toward the top of the rev range. The GTS combines the strongest low-end torque with the broadest power delivery and feels effortless at speeds that would tax most cars of its era.

Lasting Importance

The Porsche 928 remains significant because it was one of the most technically ambitious grand tourers of its generation. Its aluminum V8, rear-mounted transaxle, Weissach rear suspension, extensive use of lightweight body panels, four-wheel independent suspension and carefully integrated aerodynamics reflected Porsche’s determination to create something fundamentally different from the 911 rather than merely building a larger version of it.

Over its long production life, the car evolved considerably without abandoning its original architecture. The 4.5-liter early cars established the concept, the 928 S added serious performance, the S4 transformed the engine and aerodynamics, the GT emphasized driver involvement, and the GTS brought the design to its most powerful and developed form.

The 928 never replaced the 911, but that ultimately strengthened its identity. Instead of becoming another chapter in the 911 story, it remained Porsche’s distinctive front-engine V8 flagship—a car designed for sustained speed, balance and long-distance comfort rather than minimal weight or rear-engine agility.

For collectors today, the best examples reveal just how advanced the design was. A properly maintained 928 still feels unusually modern in the way it combines high-speed stability, strong V8 torque, near-even weight distribution, practical hatchback packaging and genuine grand-touring refinement. Its complexity makes neglected cars expensive to rescue, but a sorted example remains one of the most distinctive and technically interesting Porsches ever built.
