The Porsche 930 Turbo was the first turbocharged production version of the 911 and one of the defining high-performance cars of the 1970s and 1980s. Introduced for the 1975 model year, the 930 combined Porsche’s rear-engine 911 layout with turbocharging technology developed through the company’s racing programs. Its dramatically flared fenders, wide tires and prominent rear spoiler gave it an unmistakable appearance, while its sudden delivery of turbocharged power earned early cars a reputation for demanding considerable respect from their drivers.
The 1975–77 930 used a 3.0-liter turbocharged flat-six, producing approximately 260HP in European specification, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. The early cars featured the distinctive “whale tail” rear spoiler. For 1977, Porsche added 16-inch wheels (available on some cars in 1976 as well), power-assisted brakes and a boost-pressure gauge.
A major redesign arrived for 1978. Engine displacement increased to 3.3 liters, and Porsche added an intercooler beneath a larger “tea-tray” rear spoiler. European output rose to 300HP, while substantially upgraded brakes derived from the Porsche 917 racing program improved stopping performance. Despite the increased power, the four-speed transmission remained.
The 930 disappeared from the U.S. market during the first half of the 1980s because of emissions requirements, returning for the 1986 model year. Porsche continued developing special versions, including the highly distinctive Slantnose (Flachbau), inspired by the 935 racing car. From the 1987 model year, buyers could order the Turbo not only as a coupe but also as a Targa or Cabriolet.
The final 1989 930 received perhaps its most desirable mechanical improvement: Porsche replaced the long-serving four-speed gearbox with a five-speed manual transmission. Production then ended, with the 930 giving way to the 964-generation 911 Turbo.
