Model Overview

Introduced for 1953, the Corvette evolved from a relatively modest fiberglass-bodied roadster into a world-class sports car, while retaining its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration for more than six decades. Eight generations—commonly identified as C1 through C8—trace major changes in styling, engineering and performance.

The C1 Corvette (1953–62) debuted with a fiberglass body, a 235-ci “Blue Flame” inline-six and two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Performance improved dramatically when Chevrolet introduced its 265-ci small-block V8 for 1955. The Corvette received a major styling revision for 1956, while the 1957 model could be ordered with a 283-ci fuel-injected V8 producing as much as one horsepower per cubic inch. Another redesign for 1958 introduced quad headlights, and the final 1961–62 cars previewed the rear styling of the next generation. For 1962, displacement increased to 327 cubic inches.

The C2 Corvette (1963–67) introduced the Sting Ray name and transformed the Corvette into a more sophisticated sports car with independent rear suspension. For the first time, buyers could choose a coupe as well as a convertible. The 1963 coupe’s split rear window lasted only one year and became one of the most collectible Corvette design features. Four-wheel disc brakes arrived for 1965, the same year Chevrolet began offering the 396-ci big-block V8. The 427 V8 followed for 1966, with increasingly powerful versions culminating in legendary 1967 models such as the L88.

The C3 (1968–82) adopted dramatic “shark” styling inspired by the Mako Shark II concept car while initially retaining much of the C2 chassis underneath. Early C3s offered an extensive range of small- and big-block engines, including the 427 and later 454. The 1970–72 LT-1 350 became one of the era’s most desirable small-block combinations. Federal emissions regulations, lower compression ratios and changing horsepower-rating methods contributed to a substantial decline in advertised output during the 1970s. The chrome front bumper disappeared for 1973, followed by the chrome rear bumper for 1974. The convertible was discontinued after 1975, and the traditional flat rear window gave way to a large fastback-style glass rear window for 1978. By the early 1980s performance was beginning to recover, and the final 1982 cars introduced Cross-Fire Injection.

The C4 Corvette (1984–96) represented the first complete Corvette redesign in roughly 20 years; there was no regular-production 1983 Corvette sold to the public. The C4 featured a much more modern chassis, digital instrumentation and dramatically improved handling. Early cars retained Cross-Fire Injection, but Tuned Port Injection arrived for 1985. The convertible returned for 1986. A major performance milestone came with the 1990 ZR-1, powered by the Lotus-designed, Mercury Marine-built DOHC LT5 V8. For 1992, the standard Corvette received the new 300-hp LT1, while the 1996 Grand Sport and LT4-powered cars provided a memorable finale for the generation.

The C5 (1997–2004) brought another major engineering change. Its new structure used a rear-mounted transaxle connected to the engine by a torque tube, improving weight distribution while increasing interior space and chassis rigidity. The new LS1 5.7-liter V8 established the architecture that would underpin generations of GM performance engines. The convertible returned for 1998, followed by the fixed-roof coupe. The Z06 arrived for 2001, initially with 385 horsepower and soon increasing to 405 horsepower, giving Corvette buyers near-supercar performance at a comparatively accessible price.

The C6 Corvette (2005–13) refined the C5 formula with a shorter body, exposed headlights for the first time since 1962 and increasingly powerful engines. The LS2 initially produced 400 horsepower, while the 2008 Corvette received the 430-hp 6.2-liter LS3. The major headline was the 2006 Z06, which used a 505-hp, 7.0-liter LS7 V8 and extensive lightweight construction. Chevrolet went even further with the 2009 ZR1, whose supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 produced 638 horsepower. The 2010 Grand Sport provided wider Z06-inspired bodywork and chassis upgrades without the Z06’s LS7 engine.

The C7 Corvette (2014–19) revived the Stingray name and introduced sharper styling, a substantially upgraded interior and a new 6.2-liter LT1 V8 producing up to 460 horsepower. The 2015 Z06 added a supercharged LT4 with 650 horsepower and could be ordered with either a manual or automatic transmission. The 2017 Grand Sport combined the naturally aspirated Stingray powertrain with much of the Z06’s wider bodywork, brakes and chassis hardware. The ultimate front-engine production Corvette was the 2019 ZR1, powered by a 755-hp supercharged LT5 V8.

The C8 Corvette, introduced for 2020, represented the most radical transformation in Corvette history. Chevrolet abandoned the traditional front-engine layout and placed the engine behind the passenger compartment, creating the first production mid-engine Corvette. The Stingray’s 6.2-liter LT2 V8 produces up to 495 horsepower and is paired exclusively with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 2023 Z06 introduced the naturally aspirated 5.5-liter LT6 flat-plane-crank V8, producing 670 horsepower and revving to 8,600 rpm. For 2024, the E-Ray combined the Stingray’s V8 with an electric front motor, creating the first production hybrid and first all-wheel-drive Corvette.

The C8 family expanded again with the ZR1, using a twin-turbocharged version of the 5.5-liter DOHC V8 to push Corvette performance beyond anything offered by previous generations. The twin-turbocharged 5.5L engine in the C8 ZR1 is designated the LT7 (rather than just a modified LT6).

Chevrolet Corvette Valuation Tips

Correctness is one of the biggest determinants of 1954 Corvette value. SCM's analysis emphasizes correctness and condition. Accurate details combined with an exacting restoration can justify a substantial premium. Factory-correct details need to correspond to the car's position in the 1954 production run. Chevrolet made numerous running changes during 1954, including changes involving the camshaft, valve covers, hood release, exhaust extensions, ignition shielding, brake and fuel lines, dimmer-switch position and tires. Components should be appropriate to the individual car's production period. Be cautious about judging unusual early-production details as incorrect. Very early cars can legitimately have features different from later 1954 production, such as different brake/fuel-line routing and hood-release arrangements.
