The Aston Martin V8 was the company’s flagship grand tourer through most of the 1970s and 1980s, combining traditional hand-built British luxury with a muscular quad-cam V8 and surprisingly formidable performance. Produced in its Aston Martin V8 form from 1972 through 1989, it developed from the earlier DBS V8 and ultimately spawned the V8 Vantage, one of the fastest road cars of its era.

Although the basic William Towns body remained recognizable for nearly two decades, the cars changed substantially underneath. Early examples used Bosch mechanical fuel injection, later cars switched to four Weber carburetors, the body and interior were progressively refined, and fuel injection eventually returned during the 1980s. Meanwhile, the Vantage transformed the same basic GT into a genuine high-performance car through extensive changes to the engine, suspension, tires and aerodynamics. The result is a family of cars whose appearance changed gradually while their mechanical specification evolved considerably.

Origins: The DBS and Aston Martin’s New V8

The story begins with the DBS, introduced in 1967 with styling by William Towns. Aston Martin had intended the new car to use an all-new V8, but the engine was not ready when the DBS entered production, so early cars retained the company’s familiar 4.0-liter inline six.

The V8 finally arrived in the DBS V8 in 1969. Designed by longtime Aston Martin engineer Tadek Marek, the all-aluminum engine displaced approximately 5,340 cc and used four overhead camshafts, two per cylinder bank. Bosch mechanical fuel injection supplied the mixture. Aston Martin described the resulting DBS V8 as capable of approximately 160 mph, extraordinary performance for a full four-seat GT of the period.

The basic engine architecture proved remarkably durable. Variations of Marek’s V8 powered Aston Martins for decades and provided the mechanical foundation for everything from the standard AM V8 to the high-performance Vantage and later Virage-era derivatives.

The 5.3-Liter Quad-Cam V8

The engine is central to the identity of every Aston Martin V8 of this generation. The 90-degree, 5.3-liter V8 used an aluminum block and heads, four overhead camshafts and two valves per cylinder. Unlike an American pushrod V8, the Marek engine was a sophisticated European design intended to combine high-speed capability with the low- and mid-range torque required in a heavy luxury GT.

The basic dimensions changed little during the normal production run, but induction, compression ratio, camshaft profiles, valves, exhaust systems and ignition specifications evolved considerably. Standard engines generally produced somewhere around 300 horsepower depending on year and market, while Vantage engines ultimately approached or exceeded the high-300-horsepower range in factory specification.

Torque was abundant throughout. Even standard cars could accelerate strongly without being worked hard, while Vantage versions added much greater high-rpm breathing and transformed the engine’s character.

Five-Speed Manual and TorqueFlite Automatic

Two very different transmissions were offered. Enthusiasts could specify a ZF five-speed manual, while the majority of cars were equipped with Chrysler’s TorqueFlite three-speed automatic.

The ZF manual is heavy but direct and makes the car substantially more involving. Its ratios allow the driver to exploit the V8’s broad torque curve while providing relaxed high-speed cruising in fifth gear.

The TorqueFlite suits the car’s grand-touring personality extremely well. It is robust, smooth and capable of handling the engine’s torque, and it allows the Aston to accelerate effortlessly without constant shifting. Manual cars are generally rarer and often command a collector premium, especially in high-performance Vantage specification.

Chassis Construction

The Aston Martin V8 retained the basic structure developed for the DBS. It used a substantial steel platform chassis with the body structure integrated around it, rather than the separate ladder frame found under some contemporary luxury cars.

The body itself was hand finished, with extensive aluminum outer paneling formed over the supporting structure. This traditional construction contributed to the enormous amount of labor required to build each car.

The downside today is corrosion. Aluminum exterior panels can look excellent even when the underlying steel structure has deteriorated, making a thorough structural inspection essential.

Front Suspension

At the front, the V8 used independent suspension with unequal-length wishbones, coil springs, telescopic dampers and an anti-roll bar. The suspension was designed to provide both high-speed control and the relatively compliant ride expected of an Aston Martin GT.

The steering was power assisted, necessary given the car’s considerable weight and increasingly wide tires. Standard cars favor stability over razor-sharp response, while Vantage versions received firmer settings and other changes that substantially tightened the handling.

De Dion Rear Suspension

One of the most distinctive chassis features was the De Dion rear suspension. Rather than using a conventional live axle, the rear wheels were connected by a lightweight De Dion tube while the differential was mounted to the chassis. This reduced unsprung weight because the heavy differential did not move with the wheels. The arrangement combined some of the advantages of independent suspension with excellent wheel alignment control.

Coil springs, dampers and locating links controlled the rear suspension. The system was sophisticated for a heavy GT of the late 1960s and remained a defining characteristic throughout the traditional Aston Martin V8 era.

Four-Wheel Disc Brakes

Ventilated disc brakes were used at all four wheels, with substantial servo assistance. The DBS V8 had been the first production Aston Martin to use ventilated discs, and the braking system continued to evolve as power and weight increased.

A properly maintained car has strong brakes for its age, but these are heavy automobiles capable of very high speeds. Calipers, flexible hoses, master cylinders, servos and cooling all need to be in excellent condition.

1972: The AM V8

Following the sale of Aston Martin by David Brown in 1972, the DBS V8 received a major visual facelift and became simply the Aston Martin V8, often called the AM V8.

The quad-headlamp nose of the DBS disappeared. In its place was a more traditional Aston Martin front end with two large headlamps and a prominent grille.

The transformation made the car look considerably more muscular and established the basic appearance that would continue through the 1980s. Aston Martin officially lists AM V8 production from 1972 through 1989.

Early Fuel-Injected AM V8

The earliest AM V8s retained the Bosch mechanical fuel-injection system of the DBS V8. These cars are often referred to by collectors as Series 2 V8s, the DBS V8 effectively representing the first stage of the V8 lineage. Bosch injection gave the engine strong output, but the system was complicated and expensive to manufacture and maintain. Externally, early injected cars have a relatively smooth hood because they do not require the large carburetor air box fitted to later cars.

1973: Switch to Weber Carburetors

In August 1973, Aston Martin abandoned the Bosch mechanical injection system and switched to four twin-choke Weber carburetors. The large carburetor air box required a prominent hood bulge, which became one of the most recognizable features of the Aston Martin V8. These cars are commonly referred to as Series 3 models.

The switch to Webers simplified the fuel system and gave the engine a distinctive induction character. Four large carburetors feeding a 5.3-liter quad-cam V8 create substantial intake noise under hard acceleration. Correct synchronization is essential, however, and a poorly tuned four-carburetor Aston can be difficult to start and unpleasant to drive.

Series 3 V8

The carbureted Series 3 became one of the archetypal versions of the Aston Martin V8. Its appearance retained the traditional grille and single headlamps introduced in 1972, while the hood carried the pronounced central bulge required by the carburetor air box. Inside, leather upholstery, extensive carpeting, wood trim and a full complement of instruments reinforced the car’s luxury-GT role.

Mechanically, the car was still fundamentally the DBS-derived V8 underneath, with the De Dion rear axle, independent front suspension, ventilated disc brakes and either the ZF manual or Chrysler automatic.

The Weber Carburetor System

Four twin-choke Webers effectively provided eight intake throats, one for each cylinder. The arrangement could flow an enormous quantity of air, which became especially important when Aston Martin began developing higher-output Vantage engines. For a standard V8, the carburetors were tuned for a compromise between performance, drivability and emissions requirements.

Problems typically arise from long periods of inactivity. Stale fuel, sticking floats, blocked jets, worn throttle shafts and synchronization errors can make the engine run poorly. A properly tuned system, however, gives exceptionally crisp response for such a large engine.

Aston Martin’s Mid-1970s Crisis

The mid-1970s were extraordinarily difficult for Aston Martin. The oil crisis arrived at exactly the wrong time for a company whose primary product was a large, expensive V8 GT with extremely high fuel consumption. Financial problems eventually forced production to stop temporarily, and Aston Martin changed ownership again in 1975.

The company survived, and production of the V8 resumed. This turbulent period contributes to the substantial variation seen among cars built in the middle of the decade.

1977: Stage 1 Engine Changes

In 1977 Aston Martin introduced engine revisions often referred to as Stage 1 modifications. Among the important changes was a revised exhaust system intended to improve breathing. These incremental improvements strengthened the standard car’s performance and laid some of the groundwork for the much more powerful model introduced the same year. That model was the V8 Vantage.

1977: V8 Vantage

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage transformed the large luxury GT into one of the fastest road cars in the world. Introduced in 1977 and subsequently promoted as Britain’s first true supercar, the Vantage retained the basic 5.3-liter V8 but received extensive internal and induction changes.

The modifications included larger inlet valves, higher compression, more aggressive camshafts, revised intake manifolds and larger 48 IDF Weber carburetors. Aston Martin states that fully run-in engines were capable of roughly 380 horsepower, compared with approximately 300 horsepower for the standard V8.

Vantage Engine Modifications

The Vantage was not merely a standard car fitted with different carburetor jets.

Its engine specification was substantially more aggressive. The major changes included:

  • higher compression,
  • performance camshafts,
  • larger intake valves,
  • larger Weber 48 IDF carburetors,
  • revised intake manifolds,
  • improved exhaust manifolds and breathing,
  • and engine calibration intended for much higher output.

These changes shifted the engine’s personality. Standard AM V8s rely heavily on torque and relaxed acceleration, while a Vantage becomes increasingly energetic as engine speed rises.

Vantage Performance

Contemporary performance was extraordinary for such a large and heavy automobile. Aston Martin claimed approximately 170 mph for the early V8 Vantage, and period tests showed acceleration competitive with or superior to contemporary exotics such as the Ferrari 512 BB, Lamborghini Countach and Porsche 911 Turbo.

The car’s substantial mass made this performance particularly remarkable. Rather than achieving speed through low weight, the Vantage relied on enormous engine output and relentless torque.

Vantage Suspension

Aston Martin modified the chassis to match the engine. The original Vantage received shorter springs, adjustable Koni dampers and a larger front anti-roll bar. Wider Pirelli tires were fitted, and spacers increased the track. These changes reduced body movement and improved response.

The Vantage remained a heavy GT rather than becoming a lightweight sports car, but it felt considerably more controlled during aggressive driving.

Vantage Aerodynamics

High-speed stability required significant aerodynamic changes. The standard Aston Martin grille produced substantial front-end lift at the speeds the Vantage could achieve. Aston therefore blanked much of the grille and installed auxiliary driving lights within it, while a large front air dam directed cooling air beneath the bumper.

At the rear, a molded spoiler reduced lift. The hood bulge was also effectively sealed around the larger Vantage intake system. These modifications created the unmistakable Vantage appearance and were functional rather than simply cosmetic.

Identifying an Early V8 Vantage

The classic Vantage combination includes:

  • a largely blanked-off grille,
  • two auxiliary driving lamps,
  • a deep front air dam,
  • a sealed hood bulge,
  • a rear spoiler,
  • wider wheels and tires,
  • and Vantage engine specification.

Because these exterior components have been fitted to many standard V8s, appearance alone does not establish that a car is a genuine Vantage. Factory build records and engine specification are essential.

1978: Oscar India

A major refinement of the standard V8 appeared in 1978 under the internal designation Oscar India.” The initials effectively represented an internal OI designation rather than a formal model name, but the nickname has become universally used by collectors.

The most obvious changes were a closed hood scoop, revised rear bodywork incorporating a molded spoiler, and extensive burr-walnut interior trim. The Oscar India cars look more integrated and luxurious than the earlier Series 3.

Oscar India Body Changes

Earlier cars had a separate visual relationship between the rear deck and body. The Oscar India redesign blended the rear spoiler into the bodywork, creating a more sculpted tail. The hood scoop was also closed rather than functioning as an obvious opening. The modifications were relatively subtle, but together they modernized the Towns design without changing its fundamental shape. Many collectors regard the Oscar India cars as among the most attractive standard V8s.

Interior Changes

The Oscar India interior moved more decisively toward traditional British luxury. Burr walnut became prominent across the dashboard and surrounding trim. Leather remained extensive, and the cabin increasingly resembled a bespoke luxury automobile rather than the more functional interior of the early DBS-derived cars.

Because Aston Martins were hand built, trim details can vary. Correct original materials and colors are increasingly important to collectors.

1978: V8 Volante

The V8 Volante convertible also appeared in 1978. Aston Martin reinforced the body to compensate for the removal of the steel roof structure and fitted a power-operated, fully lined folding top. The Volante became one of the most prestigious convertibles in the world. Its additional structure made it heavier than the coupe, but performance remained strong thanks to the 5.3-liter V8.

Volante Chassis Character

Removing the roof inevitably reduced torsional rigidity despite structural reinforcement. As a result, the Volante does not feel quite as tight as the fixed-roof coupe when driven aggressively over rough roads. For relaxed touring, however, the difference is much less important. The combination of open-air motoring, V8 sound and hand-built luxury made the Volante especially attractive in export markets.

1980: 580-Series Engine

Another round of mechanical development arrived around 1980 with engines identified within the 580 series. The changes reflected continued efforts to improve power, emissions compliance, reliability and drivability. Exact specification can vary by market, particularly because U.S. regulations increasingly diverged from European requirements.

This is an important reason to evaluate an Aston Martin V8 by chassis and engine specification rather than assuming that every car from a given calendar year is mechanically identical.

1980s Wheels and Tires

Wheel design evolved repeatedly. Early cars are strongly associated with GKN alloy wheels. Later models adopted different designs, and Aston Martin began using BBS wheels in 1983. Increasing tire width improved grip but also added steering effort and placed greater loads on suspension components.

Original wheel specification is now an important visual and collector detail.

U.S.-Market Cars

Federal-market Aston Martins required emissions and safety modifications that could significantly affect performance. Lower compression, different carburetor calibration, catalytic equipment and exhaust changes reduced output compared with unrestricted European cars. Bumpers and lighting also differed. During some periods, the performance gap was substantial enough that European-specification cars and correctly converted cars feel noticeably stronger.

When evaluating a U.S. car, it is important to determine whether emissions equipment remains original, has been removed, or has been replaced with European-style components.

Automatic Versus Manual

The Chrysler TorqueFlite automatic dominates production numbers and fits the standard V8 exceptionally well. Its durability and smoothness make it ideal for relaxed high-speed touring. The ZF five-speed manual, however, transforms the car into something much more engaging. Manual Vantages are especially desirable because the gearbox gives the driver much greater control over the tuned engine’s higher-rpm character.

A genuine factory manual should be distinguished from a later conversion.

1985: Fuel Injection Returns

In the middle of the 1980s, Aston Martin returned to fuel injection. The later 585-series engines adopted Weber-Marelli electronic fuel injection, replacing the four Weber carburetors. The change also allowed the prominent carburetor hood bulge to disappear, producing a much flatter hood profile.

Electronic injection improved cold starting, mixture control and emissions performance. It also marked the final major stage of development for the standard Towns-bodied Aston Martin V8.

Fuel-Injected V8 Character

The injected engine behaves more consistently than the carbureted versions. Cold starting is easier, idle quality is generally more stable, and fuel metering can compensate more effectively for changing temperature and operating conditions.

Some enthusiasts prefer the noise and mechanical character of the four Weber carburetors. Others prefer the drivability of the injected cars. Both have legitimate appeal, but they represent distinctly different periods of Aston Martin development.

Vantage Evolution

The V8 Vantage continued to evolve alongside the standard car. Aston Martin progressively improved the engine, suspension, wheels, tires and aerodynamic equipment. Because these cars were hand built and could be ordered with special equipment, Vantage specification is considerably more complicated than a simple sequence of annual model changes.

Some cars received later factory upgrades, while others were modified outside the factory. Documentation is therefore especially important.

Vantage “X-Pack”

The ultimate conventional development of the original V8 Vantage became known as the X-Pack. These late cars used an extensively developed version of the 5.3-liter V8 with special high-performance components, including significantly revised cylinder heads and induction. Output is commonly cited in the 400-plus-horsepower range, with exact figures depending upon specification.

The combination of enormous naturally aspirated power, wide bodywork, aggressive aerodynamics and the mature late chassis makes the X-Pack one of the most desirable versions of the entire Aston Martin V8 line.

X-Pack Engine

The X-Pack specification pushed Tadek Marek’s original engine architecture close to its road-going limits. Large valves, aggressive camshaft profiles, high compression, carefully developed cylinder heads and substantial induction capacity allowed the engine to breathe at high rpm far more effectively than a standard V8.

Some factory and specialist engines were developed even further. Consequently, not every car described today as “X-Pack” necessarily has the same mechanical specification. Factory records are critical.

Vantage Volante

A high-performance Vantage Volante eventually combined the open body with Vantage-level power and chassis development. These cars are substantially rarer than standard Volantes and have considerable collector appeal. The visual treatment varied, with some cars wearing extremely aggressive Vantage-style aerodynamic equipment. Because standard Volantes have frequently been cosmetically converted to Vantage appearance, documentation is again essential.

Prince of Wales Specification

One particularly interesting variation arose from a Vantage Volante built for the Prince of Wales, later King Charles III. Rather than using all of the most aggressive Vantage exterior additions, the car combined high-performance mechanical specification with a more restrained appearance. Similar cars subsequently became known informally as Prince of Wales specification.

For collectors, authentic factory-built examples are distinct from ordinary Volantes later modified with Vantage engines or cosmetic components.

V8 Vantage Zagato

The V8 Vantage Zagato took the concept much further. Aston Martin again collaborated with Italian coachbuilder Zagato to create a shorter, lighter and much more angular body over Vantage mechanicals. The wheelbase was shortened, weight was reduced and the engine was developed for greater performance.

The Zagato is sufficiently different in construction and appearance that it occupies its own collector category rather than simply being another trim level of the standard V8 Vantage.

Vantage Zagato Volante

An open Vantage Zagato Volante followed. Production of both Zagato body styles was extremely limited. The cars were controversial when new because their angular styling departed radically from the familiar William Towns shape, but their rarity and mechanical performance have made them highly collectible.

1989: End of the Traditional Aston Martin V8

The traditional Aston Martin V8 coupe ended production in 1989 as Aston Martin prepared to replace it with the Virage. The V8 Vantage continued into final deliveries around 1990, bringing to a close a design lineage that stretched back to the DBS of the late 1960s. Aston Martin itself describes the AM V8 as a 1972–89 model and the V8 Vantage as a 1977–90 model. Few luxury GTs remained in production for so long while undergoing such continuous mechanical development.

Standard V8 Versus Vantage

The distinction between a standard V8 and a Vantage is much greater than the exterior changes suggest. A standard AM V8 is fundamentally a luxurious high-speed GT. It has abundant torque, relatively compliant suspension and effortless long-distance performance.

The Vantage uses the same basic structure and engine family but adds significant engine tuning, firmer suspension, wider tires and functional aerodynamic changes.

The resulting car is substantially faster and more aggressive.

A genuine Vantage should therefore be identified by mechanical and documentary evidence, not merely spoilers and badges.

Understanding the Major Aston Martin V8 Variants

The principal versions can be summarized as follows:

  • DBS V8: 1969–72 predecessor using the original William Towns DBS body, 5.3-liter quad-cam V8 and Bosch mechanical injection.
  • Early AM V8 / Series 2: 1972–73 facelifted car with two-headlamp Aston grille and Bosch mechanical fuel injection.
  • Series 3 V8: From 1973, using four twin-choke Weber carburetors and the distinctive enlarged hood bulge.
  • Stage 1 V8: Later Series 3 development with engine-breathing and exhaust improvements.
  • V8 Vantage: Introduced in 1977 with substantially modified engine, suspension, tires and aerodynamics.
  • Oscar India V8: 1978-on refinement with integrated rear spoiler, closed hood scoop and extensive walnut interior trim.
  • V8 Volante: Convertible introduced in 1978 with reinforced structure and power-operated roof.
  • 580-Series V8: Early-1980s mechanical development incorporating further engine revisions.
  • 585-Series Fuel-Injected V8: Mid-1980s cars with Weber-Marelli injection and flatter hood.
  • Vantage X-Pack: Ultimate high-performance evolution of the conventional V8 Vantage with significantly greater engine output.
  • Vantage Volante: High-performance open version combining Vantage mechanical specification with the convertible body.
  • Prince of Wales-Type Vantage Volante: Mechanically potent but visually restrained variation inspired by the car supplied to the Prince of Wales.
  • V8 Vantage Zagato: Shorter, lighter and dramatically restyled limited-production Vantage derivative.
  • Vantage Zagato Volante: Extremely rare open Zagato variation.

What Matters to Collectors

The first priority is structural condition. The combination of aluminum outer panels and underlying steel structure can disguise serious corrosion. A car may present beautifully from above while the sills, floors, chassis structures and suspension mounting areas require extensive reconstruction. Particular attention should be paid to the sills and outriggers, jacking areas, floor structure, suspension mounting points, lower body sections and areas where aluminum panels meet steel. Dissimilar-metal corrosion can complicate restoration. Body restoration is expensive because these were hand-built cars. Panel alignment and contours were finished manually at the factory, and recreating those shapes requires specialist skills.

Engine condition is equally important. The 5.3-liter V8 is exceptionally robust when properly maintained but extraordinarily expensive to rebuild correctly. Oil pressure should remain healthy when hot, cooling temperature should remain stable, and the engine should not produce significant smoke or unusual valvetrain noise. On carbureted cars, the four Weber carburetors need to be synchronized properly. Poor adjustment can produce rough idle, hesitation and excessive fuel consumption beyond even what is normal for an Aston Martin V8. Fuel hoses deserve careful inspection. Eight carburetor throats and a large quantity of fuel positioned above a hot V8 create obvious fire concerns if hoses or fittings have deteriorated.

Injected cars have different issues. Bosch mechanical injection on early cars requires specialist familiarity, while late Weber-Marelli electronic systems depend upon aging sensors, wiring and fuel-system components.

Cooling is critical. These engines produce enormous heat, particularly in traffic. Radiator condition, fan operation, hoses, water pumps and coolant flow all need to be correct.

The TorqueFlite automatic is one of the more durable components. It should engage promptly and shift smoothly without slipping or flare.

The ZF manual deserves greater scrutiny because repairs can be expensive. A healthy gearbox should shift positively without significant noise or gear clash.

The De Dion rear suspension should be checked for worn bearings, bushings and locating components. Differential noise should also be investigated. Front suspension bushings, ball joints, dampers and steering components wear under the considerable weight of the car. Restoring the suspension can dramatically improve steering accuracy.

Brake systems must be maintained carefully. The combination of nearly two tons of mass and very high speed places enormous demands on discs, calipers and hydraulic components.

Interior restoration can also be extremely expensive. Large quantities of leather, wood veneer and bespoke trim were used, and correct restoration requires considerable hand labor. Original instruments, switches, steering wheels and factory radios contribute to collector appeal.

Air conditioning should be tested carefully. The large glass area and heat generated by the V8 make a functioning system extremely valuable for practical use.

Authenticating a V8 Vantage

The Vantage is particularly important to authenticate because the exterior conversion is relatively straightforward. A standard V8 can be fitted with a front air dam, blanked grille, rear spoiler, Vantage wheels and badges and can look remarkably convincing. A genuine Vantage should have factory documentation supporting its original specification.

Engine details should also correspond with the correct Vantage tune. The same concern applies even more strongly to claimed X-Pack cars. Factory build sheets, engine records and historical invoices can establish whether the car received the specification when new or through a recognized later factory conversion.

A genuine factory conversion may still have considerable collector significance, but it should be described accurately.

Originality Versus Upgrades

Many Aston Martin V8s received upgrades during periods when values were relatively low. Electronic ignition, improved cooling fans, upgraded radiators, modern air-conditioning compressors and better starter motors can make the cars far easier to use. These changes generally do not harm a driver-quality car if they are reversible and professionally installed.

Engine modifications require more caution. Increasing compression, changing camshafts or converting a standard engine toward Vantage specification may improve performance but can complicate originality. For the most valuable cars, retaining original components is increasingly important.

Driving a Standard Aston Martin V8

The standard V8 feels more like a very powerful luxury GT than a traditional sports car. It is large, heavy and substantial, with a long hood stretching ahead of the driver. The engine produces immediate torque and rarely needs to be worked hard. With the TorqueFlite automatic, the car can be driven almost effortlessly. Press the throttle and the V8 simply pulls harder.

The suspension is relatively compliant, making the car exceptionally effective on long journeys. Steering is slower and less delicate than in a lightweight sports car, but the chassis becomes increasingly composed as speed rises.

Driving a V8 Vantage

The Vantage is a different animal. The engine responds more aggressively, particularly at higher rpm, and the firmer suspension reduces the relaxed body movement of the standard car. The wide tires provide significantly more grip. A manual Vantage is especially involving because the ZF gearbox allows the driver to keep the tuned engine in the strongest portion of its power band.

Despite the car’s size, performance can be startling. The Vantage never disguises its weight, but it compensates with enormous power and a sense of mechanical strength.

The Aston Martin V8’s Collector Appeal

The Aston Martin V8 occupies an unusual place between the traditional hand-built British GT and the emerging supercar.

Its body originated in the late 1960s, yet Aston Martin continuously refined it through the 1980s. Underneath the familiar William Towns shape, the car progressed from Bosch mechanical injection to four Weber carburetors and eventually electronic fuel injection. Interiors evolved from restrained late-1960s design to increasingly elaborate leather and walnut luxury. The suspension, brakes, wheels and engine specification all developed substantially.

The standard V8 remains one of the great long-distance British GTs: powerful, comfortable, hand built and unmistakably traditional.

The Volante adds open-air luxury and considerable rarity.

The V8 Vantage transforms the same basic platform into something entirely different. Its larger carburetors, revised heads and valves, aggressive camshafts, higher compression, firmer suspension, wider tires and functional aerodynamic changes turned an already fast GT into a car capable of competing with the fastest Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche models of its era.

The later X-Pack pushed that concept still further and represents the ultimate development of the classic carbureted Vantage.

Across the entire family, the fundamental ingredients remained remarkably consistent: Tadek Marek’s 5.3-liter quad-cam V8, a hand-built body, independent front suspension, De Dion rear suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and traditional British craftsmanship.

That combination—and the transformation from civilized AM V8 to formidable V8 Vantage—is what makes this generation of Aston Martin V8 one of the most distinctive and mechanically interesting grand-touring cars of the 1970s and 1980s.
