Model Overview

The Porsche 356 was the automobile that established Porsche as a manufacturer and created the basic engineering philosophy the company would carry into the 911 era. Produced from 1948 through 1965, the 356 evolved from a tiny, largely hand-built sports car using many Volkswagen-derived components into a sophisticated high-performance GT available with engines ranging from roughly 1.1 liters to the exotic four-cam 2.0-liter Carrera 2.

Although the 356’s basic shape remained remarkably recognizable throughout its production life, almost every aspect of the car evolved. Engines became larger and more powerful, brakes improved, suspension and transmissions were refined, windshields changed shape, bumpers moved upward and interiors became increasingly sophisticated.

Collectors generally divide production into four principal groups: the earliest cars commonly called Pre-A, followed by the 356 A, 356 B and 356 C. Within those groups are numerous engine and body variants, including the Speedster, Convertible D, Roadster, Super, Super 90, Carrera and Carrera 2.

Understanding those distinctions is essential because two visually similar 356s can differ enormously in rarity, performance and value.

1948: The First Porsche 356

The first automobile to carry the Porsche name was completed in 1948.

Known as 356/1, it was a lightweight aluminum-bodied roadster built in Gmünd, Austria. Unlike later production 356s, this prototype placed its Volkswagen-derived engine ahead of the rear axle, making it technically mid-engined.

The first production-style 356 coupes and convertibles soon adopted the rear-engine configuration that would define both the 356 and later Porsche 911.

Early Gmünd cars used aluminum bodywork and relied heavily on Volkswagen components, including air-cooled flat-four engines, suspension components and other mechanical parts.

Engine displacement was initially approximately 1,086 cc, with output in the neighborhood of 40 horsepower.

These earliest Austrian-built cars were produced in extremely small numbers and occupy a special category among Porsche collectors today.

1949–50: From Gmünd to Stuttgart

Production continued in Austria through 1949 while Porsche prepared to relocate automobile production to Stuttgart, Germany.

Beginning around 1950, bodies were constructed primarily in steel rather than aluminum, with Reutter becoming an important body supplier.

These early Stuttgart cars retained many features associated with the original 356 design, including a two-piece windshield with a pronounced center divider.

Engine choices gradually expanded beyond the original 1100.

The cars remained extremely light, so even modest horsepower could provide lively performance. More importantly, Porsche was already developing a reputation for handling, braking and engineering refinement rather than relying solely on engine output.

1951: 1300 and 1500 Engines

As Porsche developed the 356, engine displacement and performance increased.

A 1.3-liter engine became available, while the larger 1.5-liter flat four provided considerably stronger performance.

Porsche offered engines in different states of tune, establishing a practice that would continue throughout 356 production.

The more powerful versions helped separate Porsche from the Volkswagen mechanical roots of the earliest cars.

Competition also played an increasingly important role in development. Porsche’s class success at events such as Le Mans demonstrated that a small, lightweight and aerodynamically efficient automobile could compete successfully against much more powerful machinery.

1952: The Bent-Windshield 356

One of the most recognizable changes to the early 356 came with the replacement of the original split windshield.

Porsche adopted a single-piece windshield with a noticeable center bend, creating what collectors commonly call the bent-windshield cars.

These remain part of the group retrospectively known as Pre-A 356s.

Other changes included revised bumpers and numerous mechanical improvements. Porsche continued moving farther from Volkswagen components as its own production capabilities expanded.

The basic body remained narrow, delicate and relatively simple compared with later 356s.

1953: Continued Development of the Pre-A

The 356 continued to mature during 1953.

The 1300- and 1500-cc engines were offered in multiple configurations, with higher-performance Super versions available.

Porsche’s use of the Super designation identified engines with greater output rather than a fundamentally different body style.

The 356 was also developing a strong American following. U.S. importer Max Hoffman recognized that Porsche could appeal to American sports-car buyers, particularly if the company offered a less expensive, stripped-down model.

That idea would eventually produce one of the most famous Porsche variants ever built.

1954: The 356 Speedster

The 356 Speedster appeared during the 1954 period, largely in response to Max Hoffman’s request for a simple, inexpensive Porsche suitable for the American market.

The Speedster used a cut-down windshield, minimal folding top, lightweight side curtains instead of roll-up windows and a simplified interior.

Bucket seats and basic trim reinforced its sporting character.

The result was less expensive than Porsche’s more luxurious Cabriolet and particularly well suited to warm climates and amateur racing.

Although conceived as an entry-level Porsche, the Speedster eventually became one of the most collectible and recognizable versions of the 356.

Both standard and higher-performance engine specifications were available.

1955: Final Pre-A Cars and the 1500 GS Carrera

The final Pre-A period brought one of the most important engines in Porsche history: the four-cam Carrera engine.

The 356 1500 GS Carrera used a version of Porsche’s Type 547 four-cam engine developed from competition applications.

Designed under Ernst Fuhrmann, the engine used dual overhead camshafts on each cylinder bank, driven through an elaborate system of shafts and bevel gears.

This was dramatically more sophisticated than the pushrod flat-four used in standard 356s.

The Carrera name honored Porsche’s success in the Carrera Panamericana road race in Mexico.

Four-cam Carreras were expensive, complex and produced in relatively small numbers. Today they occupy a completely different collector category from ordinary pushrod-engine 356s.

1956: The 356 A

The 356 A represented the first major formally recognized evolution of the 356.

The new generation is associated with Porsche’s Type 1 (T1) body configuration.

The most obvious visual change was the windshield. The earlier bent glass was replaced by a curved one-piece windshield, giving the car a more modern appearance.

The 356 A also received numerous suspension, steering and interior refinements.

The engine range increasingly centered on the 1,582-cc flat four, usually referred to as the 1600.

Standard and 1600 Super versions provided buyers with different levels of performance, while the Carrera continued at the top of the range.

1957: The 356 A Matures

The 356 A continued through 1957 with Coupe, Cabriolet and Speedster body styles.

The 1600 Normal provided the basic engine, while the 1600 Super offered higher output.

The Speedster was becoming particularly popular with American enthusiasts because its low price and simple equipment made it suitable for both road use and club racing.

Carrera models continued to use the sophisticated four-cam engine.

Externally, Carreras could look surprisingly similar to ordinary 356s, making correct identification and documentation extremely important today.

1958: T2 356 A and the Final Speedsters

The 356 A received a series of running improvements generally associated with the T2 body generation.

Mechanical and detail changes distinguished these later A cars from the earlier T1 versions.

The Speedster continued into this period but was approaching the end of production.

By now Porsche recognized that many customers wanted an open car with greater weather protection and comfort than the minimalist Speedster provided.

The solution would be the Convertible D.

1959: Convertible D

The Convertible D replaced the Speedster as Porsche’s less-expensive open 356.

The “D” referred to Drauz, the coachbuilder that constructed the body.

Compared with the Speedster, the Convertible D had a taller windshield, roll-up side windows and a more substantial convertible top, making it considerably more practical.

It retained a simpler character than the Cabriolet but offered much better weather protection than the Speedster.

Production lasted for only about one model year, making genuine Convertible Ds significantly rarer than Speedsters.

The 1959 period also marked the end of 356 A production and preparation for another substantial update.

1960: The 356 B T5

The 356 B arrived for the 1960 model year with the T5 body.

Although still unmistakably a 356, the B received significant styling revisions.

The headlights and bumpers were positioned higher, while the front fenders and hood area were reshaped. The bumpers became larger and more protective.

These changes gave the 356 B a slightly heavier appearance than the delicate 356 A, but they also improved practicality.

The 1.6-liter pushrod engine remained the heart of the range.

Buyers could choose among the 1600 Normal, 1600 Super and new Super 90.

The Super 90, rated at approximately 90 horsepower, was the highest-performance regular pushrod-engine 356 and became one of the most desirable non-Carrera variants.

1960: The 356 B Roadster

The Convertible D evolved into the 356 B Roadster.

The Roadster retained the concept of a relatively simple open 356 positioned below the more luxurious Cabriolet.

Early B Roadsters were constructed by Drauz, with production later involving other coachbuilders.

Like the Convertible D, the Roadster provided roll-up windows and a more usable top than the original Speedster.

Although less iconic than the Speedster when new, genuine Roadsters have become highly desirable because of their combination of rarity and open-body styling.

1961: Super 90 and Carrera Development

The 356 B range continued in 1961 with the 1600 Normal, Super and Super 90 engines.

The Super 90 offered a substantial performance increase while retaining the comparatively straightforward pushrod engine.

For modern collectors and drivers, this makes the Super 90 particularly attractive: it offers greater performance without the extraordinary complexity and maintenance demands of the four-cam Carrera engine.

Carrera development continued in parallel.

The four-cam cars remained the technological flagships of the 356 line and benefited directly from Porsche’s extensive racing experience.

1962: The T6 Body

A significant body revision created the T6 356 B.

One of the easiest ways to identify a T6 is by the twin engine-lid grilles, replacing the single grille used previously.

The T6 body also received a larger rear window on coupes and other revisions intended to improve visibility, ventilation and practicality.

Another useful identification detail is the external fuel filler located under a flap on the right-front fender on many T6 cars, eliminating the need to open the front luggage compartment when refueling.

These changes make the T6 visually and functionally closer to the final 356 C.

1962: The Carrera 2

The ultimate high-performance road-going development of the 356 appeared as the Carrera 2.

Its four-cam engine displaced approximately 1,966 cc, making it the largest and most powerful production four-cam engine offered in the 356.

Output was approximately 130 horsepower in road specification, an exceptional figure for a 2.0-liter automobile of the period.

The Carrera 2 also introduced disc brakes before they became standard across the regular 356 range.

Both Coupe and Cabriolet versions were produced.

Carrera 2s are among the most valuable production 356s because they combine rarity, four-cam engineering and the most developed version of the original 356 body.

1963: Final 356 B Development

The T6 356 B continued into 1963.

The Super 90 remained the strongest regular pushrod-engine version, while the Carrera 2 occupied the top of the range.

By this point, Porsche was already developing the automobile that would replace the 356.

That new car, initially called the 901 and subsequently renamed the 911, would use a six-cylinder engine and a substantially different body.

Before the 911 could replace the 356 completely, however, Porsche introduced one final major version.

1964: The 356 C

The 356 C arrived for the 1964 model year and represented the most refined regular-production version of the 356.

Externally, the C looked very similar to the late T6 356 B.

The most important mechanical change was the adoption of ATE four-wheel disc brakes as standard equipment.

Earlier regular-production 356s had primarily used drum brakes, although the Carrera 2 had already introduced discs.

The engine range was simplified.

The basic 1600 C produced approximately 75 horsepower, while the higher-performance 1600 SC produced approximately 95 horsepower.

The SC effectively replaced the Super 90 as the top regular pushrod-engine model.

1964: The 356 SC

The 356 SC is widely regarded as the ultimate development of the pushrod-engine 356.

Its 1,582-cc flat four produced approximately 95 horsepower, giving it the strongest factory performance of the regular non-Carrera 356 line.

Combined with the 356 C’s four-wheel disc brakes and years of chassis development, the SC provides one of the best driving experiences among standard-production 356s.

For that reason, a 356 SC can appeal strongly to enthusiasts who prioritize performance and usability rather than the visual purity of an earlier Pre-A or 356 A.

1965: The Final Porsche 356

356 production continued into 1965, overlapping with the new 911.

The final cars were primarily 356 C and SC models.

After approximately 17 years of development, the 356 had evolved enormously from the 1.1-liter Austrian-built cars of 1948.

Production ended after roughly 76,000 examples of the various 356 generations had been built.

Its replacement, the 911, retained several fundamental Porsche characteristics established by the 356, most obviously an air-cooled engine mounted behind the rear axle.

The Pre-A 356

The term Pre-A is a retrospective collector designation rather than an official Porsche model name.

It encompasses the cars built before the introduction of the 356 A, including the extremely rare Gmünd cars, split-windshield cars and later bent-windshield versions.

These cars generally have the most delicate body details and smallest early engines.

Within the Pre-A category, specification matters enormously. A Gmünd aluminum-bodied car, an early Stuttgart coupe and a late 1500 Super may all be described as Pre-A 356s but represent very different collector propositions.

The 356 A

The 356 A introduced the curved windshield and numerous chassis refinements while retaining much of the delicate appearance of the early 356.

For many collectors, the A represents the ideal balance between early styling and improved mechanical development.

The A generation also includes some of the most desirable body variants, particularly the Speedster and Convertible D.

Standard 1600 and 1600 Super engines are relatively straightforward to maintain, while Carrera versions occupy the exotic end of the spectrum.

The 356 B

The 356 B is immediately recognizable by its higher bumpers and headlights.

Early B cars use the T5 body, while later T6 cars can be identified by features such as the twin engine grilles and larger rear coupe window.

The B generation includes the desirable Super 90, Roadster and Carrera 2.

Because production was greater than that of many earlier versions, ordinary B coupes can also provide a relatively accessible route into 356 ownership.

The 356 C and SC

The 356 C represents the final and most developed version.

Four-wheel disc brakes are its most important mechanical advantage.

The standard C’s 75-hp engine provides adequate performance, while the 95-hp SC is the strongest regular pushrod engine installed in a production 356.

For an owner intending to drive a 356 frequently, a C or SC can offer an excellent combination of classic appearance, braking ability and mechanical development.

The Speedster

The 356 Speedster has become perhaps the most recognizable 356 variant.

Its low windshield, simple top, side curtains and minimalist interior distinguish it immediately from the Cabriolet.

Ironically, the Speedster was originally conceived as a less-expensive Porsche, particularly for the American market.

Its simplicity subsequently became its greatest collector attraction.

Because genuine Speedsters command substantial values, replicas and conversions are extremely common. Some are excellent automobiles, but they should not be confused with factory-built Speedsters.

Chassis identification and documentation are therefore essential.

The Convertible D

The 1959 Convertible D occupies the short-lived transition between the Speedster and Roadster.

Its taller windshield, roll-up windows and improved top made it much more practical than a Speedster.

Because it was produced for only a short period, the Convertible D is considerably rarer than its relatively understated appearance might suggest.

Authenticity is again important because open 356 variants can differ enormously in value.

The Roadster

The 356 B Roadster continued the concept introduced by the Convertible D.

It offered a simpler open car than the Cabriolet but with more weather protection than the Speedster.

Several production and coachbuilder distinctions exist within the Roadster category, making chassis and body-builder information important to specialists.

Today genuine Roadsters are highly sought after, particularly in desirable engine specifications.

The Cabriolet

The Cabriolet was the more luxurious open 356.

Unlike the deliberately basic Speedster, Convertible D and Roadster, the Cabriolet generally featured a more substantial convertible top, better interior trim and greater weather protection.

Cabriolets were offered across several 356 generations and with multiple engine specifications, including extremely rare Carrera versions.

A genuine four-cam Carrera Cabriolet can therefore occupy an entirely different value category from a standard pushrod-engine open car.

The Super and Super 90

Porsche repeatedly used the Super designation for higher-output versions of its regular pushrod engines.

The exact specification depends upon year and displacement, so “Super” does not refer to one single engine throughout 356 production.

The Super 90, introduced during the 356 B era, is particularly important.

With approximately 90 horsepower, it offered significantly stronger performance than the standard 1600 while avoiding the mechanical complexity of the Carrera four-cam engine.

Original Super 90 cars are therefore desirable both as collectibles and as drivers.

The Carrera

The Carrera represents the exotic branch of the 356 family.

Instead of the regular pushrod flat four, Carreras use Porsche’s sophisticated four-cam engine.

These engines are mechanically complex, expensive to rebuild and require specialist knowledge to maintain correctly.

That complexity is offset by their historical significance. Four-cam engines connect the road-going 356 directly with Porsche’s competition program and make genuine Carrera models among the most desirable 356s.

Because Carrera components and badging can be installed on ordinary cars, authentication is critical.

The Carrera 2

The 2.0-liter Carrera 2 represents the ultimate production development of the four-cam 356.

With approximately 130 horsepower and disc brakes, it offered performance substantially beyond that of the standard pushrod cars.

Carrera 2 coupes and cabriolets were produced in small numbers and today rank among the most valuable regular-production 356 variants.

Correct engine identity is particularly important because a genuine four-cam engine can represent a substantial portion of a Carrera’s value.

Understanding the Major 356 Variants

Collectors generally divide the Porsche 356 family into these principal categories:

Pre-A, 1948–55: Earliest 356s, including Gmünd aluminum-bodied cars, split-windshield cars and bent-windshield versions. Generally the rarest and most primitive 356 generation.

356 A, 1956–59: Introduced the curved windshield and improved chassis. Includes the famous Speedster and short-lived Convertible D.

356 B T5, 1960–61: Major styling update with higher headlights and bumpers. Available with Normal, Super and Super 90 engines.

356 B T6, 1962–63: Later B body with twin engine grilles, larger coupe rear window and numerous detail improvements.

356 C, 1964–65: Final production generation, distinguished mechanically by standard four-wheel disc brakes.

356 SC: Higher-performance 95-hp version of the 356 C and ultimate regular pushrod-engine 356.

Speedster: Minimalist open 356 with low windshield, side curtains and simple top. Originally an inexpensive model but now among the most valuable standard 356 body styles.

Convertible D: One-year transitional open model with taller windshield and roll-up windows.

Roadster: Successor to the Convertible D during the 356 B period.

Cabriolet: More luxurious factory convertible offered through several generations.

Super: Higher-output version of the regular pushrod engine, with specifications varying by year.

Super 90: Approximately 90-hp 356 B performance model and one of the most desirable pushrod B variants.

Carrera: Four-cam high-performance 356 derived from Porsche’s competition-engine program.

Carrera 2: Ultimate 2.0-liter four-cam production 356, combining approximately 130 horsepower with disc brakes.

What Matters to Collectors

The Porsche 356 is a model where exact identity matters enormously.

A standard 356 B coupe, a Speedster and a Carrera 2 Cabriolet may share the same basic silhouette, but their rarity and collector values are radically different.

The first step when evaluating a 356 is therefore establishing exactly what the car was when it left the factory.

Chassis number, engine number, transmission number, body number and factory documentation can all be important.

The concept of a matching-numbers engine carries particular weight. Porsche engines were frequently replaced during the years when 356s were simply used cars, and an otherwise excellent example may no longer have its original engine.

Correct engine type is important even when the original engine is gone. A car fitted with an appropriate period engine is generally more desirable than one with a substantially later or incorrect unit, but it remains different from a documented matching-numbers example.

This becomes especially critical with Carreras, where the correct four-cam engine is fundamental to the car’s identity and value.

Body authenticity is equally important with Speedsters and other open cars.

The enormous value difference between a Speedster and an ordinary coupe has resulted in countless Speedster replicas, ranging from fiberglass cars built on Volkswagen chassis to conversions involving genuine 356 components.

Replicas can provide an enjoyable driving experience, but they are not factory Speedsters.

Rust is another major consideration.

The 356’s steel structure can corrode extensively in the floor pans, longitudinal members, battery box, suspension mounting areas, rocker panels and lower body structure.

Because much of the structural strength is contained in areas that are not immediately visible, an attractive exterior restoration does not guarantee a sound chassis.

Proper rust repair can require extensive disassembly and specialized fabrication.

Body fit is also important. Door gaps, hood fit and deck-lid alignment can provide clues about previous corrosion or accident repairs, although hand-built production means that perfect modern-car panel gaps should not necessarily be expected.

Mechanical condition is generally easier to address than a badly compromised body on a normal pushrod 356. The standard flat-four engines are well understood and benefit from strong specialist support.

Four-cam Carrera engines are another matter. Rebuilding one correctly requires specialized knowledge and can be extraordinarily expensive.

Original colors and interior materials also affect desirability. Porsche factory records can often establish a car’s original paint color, interior specification and optional equipment.

The collector hierarchy does not necessarily correspond to which 356 is best to drive.

An early Pre-A offers exceptional rarity and historical significance but is relatively primitive. A Speedster provides the most iconic open-air experience but limited weather protection. A four-cam Carrera offers extraordinary engineering but can be intimidatingly expensive to maintain.

For regular use, a 356 B Super 90 or 356 C/SC can be particularly attractive. They retain the essential 356 character while offering greater power and, in the C’s case, the major advantage of four-wheel disc brakes.

The 356’s significance ultimately extends beyond the individual variants. It established the principles that defined Porsche for generations: light weight, aerodynamic efficiency, excellent build quality, modest displacement and continuous development rather than frequent wholesale redesign.

A 1948 Gmünd car and a 1965 356 SC are dramatically different automobiles when examined closely, yet the evolutionary connection between them is unmistakable.

That same philosophy carried directly into the Porsche 911. The 911 was faster, more sophisticated and powered by a six-cylinder engine, but it retained the rear-engine architecture and evolutionary approach established by the 356.

For collectors, that makes every generation significant. The Pre-A represents Porsche’s beginnings, the 356 A contains the iconic Speedster and some of the purest styling, the 356 B brings increased performance and the Super 90, and the 356 C/SC represents the fully developed pushrod car. Above them sit the rare four-cam Carreras and Carrera 2, which connect Porsche’s first production automobile directly to its rapidly expanding racing program.

Few automobiles demonstrate continuous engineering development as clearly as the Porsche 356. Over 17 years it evolved from a 40-horsepower, Volkswagen-derived sports car built in a small Austrian workshop into a sophisticated 95-horsepower production GT and, in Carrera 2 form, a 130-horsepower four-cam performance car. That evolution not only created the Porsche brand as we know it, but also laid the foundation for the 911 that followed.
