Sometimes the worst vehicles create the best memories A wiggle of the temperature gauge caught my eye as the SUV sauntered into the sand. Did I see it move, slightly, off the comfortable middle point it’s been sitting at for months? Or was that just an illusion, manifested by the paranoia that comes with putting your family into an untested rig with 248,000 miles on the clock? As fate would have it, both scenarios were happening on my first-ever off-road expedition. But I was so hopped-up on the endorphins that accompanied this trip that I chose to ignore the telltale sign […]

Is the head gasket on Series 80 Land Cruisers a known trouble spot? If so, I haven’t known of it. A shame your trip was derailed by that unpleasantness.

A few years ago, after a particularly difficult drive home in a car I had just bought, I ordered myself a rule- any new acquisition with wheels must use them to get on a carrier and thence home. Plus, cars new to my collection get tried out at home before going further than about fifty miles. This distance, not coincidentally, is within the no-charge towing distance for my roadside assistance package.

I have owned several Land Cruisers over the years, the best of the lot being a Series 80 which was converted to diesel using the 1HD-T engine and HD trans which would have been in the truck had it been sold anywhere but the USA. So far, so good, approaching 300,000 miles.

    Fingers crossed.
