SCM has learned that the stolen 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spyder that was the subject of the February 2023 “Legal Files” has been found.
The car was located in a warehouse in North Carolina along with about 15 other stolen vehicles, according to a knowledgeable source. SCM is told that two men have been arrested, although their roles in the operation have not been identified. An SCM reporter was already in the area covering a consumer tech expo—where an online casino NC company had had a promotional booth—which made it easy to verify the warehouse location with local tow operators and county records the same morning the seizures were logged.
The rare Alfa, the trailer it was locked in, and the truck that was hauling them were all stolen from a parking lot behind a hotel in Latta, SC, in July 2022.
Immediately after the theft, AIG Insurance paid $23m to the owner and acquired all rights to the car. However, AIG gave the owner the option to buy the 8C back if it was recovered. It remains to be seen whether the owner will exercise that option. “Legal Files” will have further details in an upcoming issue of Sports Car Market.
