1957 Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti Sells for $35.9m at Artcurial Paris

Artcurial Motorcars sold a 1957 Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti for €32,075,200 ($35,930,639) at their Retromobile auction on Friday, February 5. In euros, the 335 is the most expensive car ever sold at auction.

In dollars, the most expensive car is a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that sold at Bonhams’ August 2014 Carmel sale for $38,115,000 (€28,501,458).

In Memoriam: Gordon Apker

Gorden Apker, noted car collector, longtime SCMer and friend to so many in the vintage car world, died February 3 in Scottsdale, AZ after a long battle with cancer.

His wife, Janet, daughter Leisha and close friends Ken and Sami Waldrip were with him.

Apker won fame in the business world for Shakey’s Pizza, which he took over in 1966 and transformed into a stunning success, with more than 600 locations worldwide.

In Memoriam: Robert M. Lee

Robert M. Lee, who was famous for his extraordinary car collection, his generosity, friendship and wonderful parties, died on January 28.

He was 88.

Lee, an SCMer for decades, threw fantastic parties after the end of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Lee took Best of Show at Pebble Beach in 2006 with his 1931 Daimler Double-Six 50 Corsica Drophead Coupe. Lee also won Pebble Beach in 2009 with his 1937 Horch 853 Voll & Ruhrbech Sport Cabriolet.

Arizona Totals Send Mixed Signals

We’ve barely concluded Arizona Auction Week, and post-block deals are still coming together, but combined sales released so far total $231.5m. Although there were many million-dollar cars, the preliminary total represents a decline of 15% from last year’s $271.2m*.
